You should know how to sharpen, and repair skates, minor repairs to the team owned gear gloves helmets pants socks and jerseys, as well as the player's own protective gear. Transporting the gear required for road games is the tough part now as you need a van or SUV. You like to drive and be prepared to spend alot of hours at the rink doing laundry, and maintaining rooms and gear. It is not a part time job for one person. I had help and still spent more than 20 hours a week afternoons weekends and evenings. Time management, adaptability, proactive and thinking outside the box are manditory. Good luck in your quest let me know if I can help out.

I know, I was just busting his hump, hoping he pops on here and has a look at some point. Actually, I think he's one of the guys I like best in hockey, believe it or not.

Their new equipment man is Norm Kernohan, who was with the Attack last season. He is also taking on their Community Relations and Promotions role as well.

The best way is to call a team and volunteer to help out with equipment, etc. I don't know very many teams at this level that will turn down a volunteer. After that, just learn and absorb as much as you can, network with as many people as possible, and let it be known what your goals and objectives are. It may take some time, it's not necessarily easy, but calling a few GM's directly is the first step. E-mail me, at derekpsharp@hotmail.com, and I can put you in contact with Ajax's GM...I know we'll likely be in the market with Norm going to Markham, if you're willing to come this far out.

Sharpie would HockeyDan6 be better off trying to get on with an OHA Club at the Jr"C"Level and working his way up the ladder to Jr"B" then 'A" better for him do you think, trying to help this guy as you are!

It's possible. But the point I was trying to make is that the place to start isn't here on these forums, it's by actually making a call to some GM's and offer to volunteer. It doesn't really matter where he starts out, although at the Jr. A level he will probably have to start out as Assistant Equipment Manager. But the key is to do the research, check the websites out, find out the GM's info, and call.

I agree with Sharpie, not too many teams will turn down a volunteer, be forewarned though, be ready to put in a lot of crappy hours...first in last out, which can be a real pain in the ass on those stretches that you're playing 4 games in 5 or 6 nights.
