Two storied franchises- the Hamilton Red Wings and the Markham Waxers put on a fast-paced game at the Dave Saturday night with the East Division team ending up on the good end of a 5-3 score. Jeff Leaist, who played for the Stoney Creek Warriors last season and had a strong game for the Waxers, scored the opening goal with Wings' Luke Watson in the box for roughing. It was his third of the season. Markham went two up just past the halfway mark of the period as David Titanic fought off two defencemen in front of the Wings' net and steered the puck past Jeff Sinclair. (Titanic who would add one more in the third has a team leading ten goals.) Less than a couple of minutes later Hamilton got on the board as Watson scooped up the loose puck in front on a powerplay. It was just the big forward's second this season. Waxers 2-1 after one.
The Red Wings had a big chance to tie things up as they started off the second period with a two-man advantage for a minute and a half but could not seriously threaten goalie Dylan Ellis. They followed that up with a man advantage but again could not connect. Dylan Boyd was assessed a 4 minute high-sticking penalty on Anthony Bergin but this time it was the Wings turn to be strong on the penalty kill. The Waxers went ahead 3-1 just before the fifteen minute mark as Aaron Garner motored down the left side and unleashed a slapper which Jeff Sinclair got a glove on but could not contain. The Wings would get that back with Watson's second powerplay goal of the game as he put away the rebound of Chris Williams' point shot. Waxers 3-2 after two.
Not quite five minutes had elapsed in the third when Buddy Robinson pulled the home team level as he beat Ellis high with a wrist shot from the right side on the edge of the faceoff circle. It was his third of the year. Speed kills and it was never more apparent on the Waxers' fourth and winning goal. Jamie Kendra broke through from centre ice, fought off a defender before poking the puck home. Kendra now has six on the season. Titanic would round out the scoring as he ended a nice passing play by cutting on from the right side and finding the corner with a slapshot. Final 5-3 Waxers.
In the absence of Andrew Radjenovic the Wings dressed 14 year-old affiliate Luke Nogard and he did not look out of place on the ice. Lucas Farraway was the backup goalie as the Wings have traded Rob Behling and his brother Brooks to Cobourg. Peter Rodrigues and Patrick Marsh were missing from the Markham lineup. Pointstreak has the first Waxer goal now credited to Cody Doiron. The Wings will try to get back in the win column Monday night as they entertain Mike Galati's Upper Canada Patriots.
Jason McDonough, Dylan Hutton, Braden Kavaratzis and Andrew Fairney all had two as Toronto blated the Panthers 10-2.
Burlington eased past the BeeHives at home 7-1. Greg Carey scored twice giving him a league-leading 22 and 30 points for the season. Patrick Stillar also had a pair for the Cougars.

The way the Waxers handled Hamilton last night it would not matter who was in goal last night, complete domination by the Waxers start to finish and playing shorthanded most of this contest.

Actually I was at the game and the Wings dominated. Hard Luck fluky goal lead to Waxer win. But ex Stoney Creek goalie in net for Waxers kept them in there. No doubt Wings will be right up there before the season ends.

They could sit on the bench with the Red Wings and watch their team lose to Upper Canada (ugh) or go to Cobourg and get 2 wins and 2 points in their first 2 games to help a quality organization get back on track. It is a win/win for both clubs. Hamilton had to move two fine players that they felt, right or wrong, would have a limited role in the short term and Cobourg needed new blood after a long slide. Also rumor is that Hamilton needed to get more local kids on the roster for financial reasons. Hopefully the Wings won't regret it but it was the right move and Cobourg is thrilled.
