The Lone Gunmen of the Apocalypse

Bonus points if you know where the last four words of my subject line are from...

I haven't seen it either, mainly due to my lack of cable. I haven't actually seen much of X-files since the movie. I liked the movie, and still say that the first 3 seasons were the bes t(ie: scariest, cleverest, and generally best written) of the whole series. I have laserdiscs of the best episodes form those seasons. I guess since it moved to L.A. it just got too Hollywood-ized, I think. Much better when they were using Vancouver, not having the limitless resources of Hollywood at their disposal. At least then they had to figure out clever ways to make it scary and effective. And, for the most part, they did it quite well back then. I think they should wrap it up and move on to something new. It's gone on long enough...

I liked the location settings in Canada MUCH MUCH better than CA...
Lone Gunmen's appeal? Well, compared to the rest of TV, what else is there?
A little campier than I'd like, too, maybe, but I'm willing to give it a chance.
And Frohike turns me on.

I watch four network shows on the nights they're aired-
Gunmen, Dark Angel, Simpsons & X-Files. X-Files, admittedly is more of a habit anymore than out of real enthusiasm. Oh, and King of the Hill and Futurama pretty frequently, but partly because they're scheduled before X-Files.

well admitedly there is next to nothing on tv.. but just like x files... I think simpsons should be shut down too... cuz its going on too long and its just not as funny anymore... the jokes and gags kinda seem overly repetitive... and king of the hill.. is good but I have a hard time relating to it...so I only catch it when I see it... actually nothing I would go out of my way to watch... except the odd documentary that I think will look neat.. and I dont know dark angel... and I'm kinda afraid to find out and be let down by more fromage... actually I do try to see razak's roughnecks.. mostly cuz it looks cool... ooh and redwall... because it reminds me of watership down which I love..

I find also out of what I know that will come out.. it seems I'll continue to be disappointed.. I'm kinda curious about the new star trek ness cuz I'm a geek.. and cuz scot bakula will be in it.. cuz I thought quantum leap was good but I'm sure it will be typical star trek garbage ... actually I think the original is good and is the only one I am willing to watch repeats of..

what do you guys think of those "real life" shows that are out now too.. I think maybe I'm not enough of a voyeur to be pulled in by those either... aargh!

ooh btw who's frohike?

Well now, aren't I a dunce! I just put the entire first two PARAGRAPHS of my response in the subject line....BWAHAHAHAHAHAHAH!!!! I suppose I could change it, but I think that's far too funny. Must be because I've only had two cigarettes all day today. The lack of nicotine in my blood is affecting my thinking. Which brings me to the THIRD thing I was going to talk about:

Regarding the "reality" shows, I must confess - I LOVE Survivor! But understand, I recognize it for what it is: A GAME SHOW! A situation created solely for the purpose of entertainment. I understand that the intentionally pick people who are going to clash with each other, in the interest of creating dramatic conflict. I could go on and on about how I "get it" in terms of the hows and whys of the show. But in the end, I think it's just a great product! It's entertaining to watch these people flounder about trying to get food, find suitable shelter, tear each other's hair out, pass out into their campfire, etc. I just love it all. But the main reason I think I like it is, IT JUST LOOKS LIKE SO DAMN MUCH FUN! Seriously, I would absolutely LOVE to do something like that. I love the whole "living out in the wilderness for a month" thing, and all the games and challenges they get to play just make it all the more fun. So yeah, in short, I'm a Survivor nut. That's about the only one I watch, though. Oh, and the occasional "Stupid People Caught On Tape" special, but that's just 'cause I'm a sadistic bastard and love watching people getting horribly injured or otherwise humiliated due to extreme stupidity.

Well, I TYPED two paragraphs worth of stuff into the subject line of my last response, but it looks like the system chopped it down to the first sentence or two. Well, here's the basics of what I said:

I LOVE Roughnecks! I picked up the video of it, and was quite impresse with not only the animation, but the gripping storyline. Can't wait for the next volume to come out! I'll have to read the original book one of these days. I hear this is a much closer adaptation, but onviously borrows heavily from the movie.

I have to agree about Star Trek. The original is defaintely my fave as well, I have about half of the original episodes on Laserdisc and could definately watch them over and over. It seems to have become a big target for ridicule, which is actually kind of a shame because I think people have forgotten just how GOOD a show it really was. I mean, it was just so bloody innovative and creative, with some of the best damn writing around. And the dynamics between the main characters have never been matched by ANY of the sequel shows. I mean, the Kirk/Spock/McCoy thing will never be beat. I think they just LUCKED OUT in terms of casting and got such a great group of actors who all just "clicked" so perfectly, that they wound up with something that they have forever been trying to duplicate, but will never achieve again.

So, you said Scott Bakula is going to be in the new Star Trek? Is that the new movie or is there going to be a new series? I'm a bit behind in my ST info...all I know is Voyager is ending this month.

what's this whatever-it-was Roughnecks? cable prgram? movie? I'm totally ignorant.

I've never watched a single whole minute of any 'reality tv' show. It embarasses me to watch, even in the privacy of my own home. Even alone in the house. It mortifies me.

And I have this awful automatic response to anything that "all of America" is watching or doing or talking about or has to buy. Utter stubborn unreasonable refusal to join in or even give a fair chance to understand. So, I'm a jerk. Sue me.

Never read a Harry Potter book, never watched one minute of Survivor.

Now if THAT subject line doesn't throw you for a loop...

This should clear up what Roughnecks is. The FULL title of the show is: "Roughnecks: The Starship Troopers Chronicles." It's a CGI (Computer Graphics Imagery) animted series based more on the original BOOK of Starship Troopers than the movie, although a lot of the visual design is based on the movie. It's quite a dark, edgy series and seems to be geared more towards an older viewing audience than kiddies. They made 40 episodes total, and have started to release them on video in 5-episodes compilation tapes and DVDs. I missed it when it was on, so I picked up the first volume of the videos. And I must say, I am QUITE impressed! I eagerly await the following volumes. If you like a good sci-fi romp with some terrific action sequences and aweomse CGI, then I definately recommend Roughnecks.

As for the "I refues to watch that because it's popular" thing, yeah, I tend to be that way a lot of the time as well. The thing is, I didn't even have cable when Survivor was originally on, so I actually kinda MISSED the whole "craze" of it. I saw some of the original previews for it before it started and thought it sounded like a cool idea, so I wanted to check it out. I got my hands on some tapes of it from a friend, and have only JUSt strated wacthing it in the last couple weeks (via the tapes). But what can I say, I enjoy a bit of trash TV once in a while. I think Survivor is a lot more CLEVER than most reality shows, however. The whole game is quite well thought out, I think. And as I said, I just think it looks like a helluva lot of fun. I think I also enjoy it because it kind of reminds me of MTV's "The Real World," which I watched back when it started. So, for me anyway, it's kinda like "The Real World meets Gilligan's Island meets Family Feud" or something.

I didn't like Starship Troopers (the movie). It wanted to be some kind of satire about that kind of propaganda-frenzy war inspires in a populace, but it didn't go far enough, or blackly enough to actually be funny, and as a result, it gave the movie a humorless feeling that I actually found a little (more than a little) objectionable.

You know that guy got the gig as Frohike completely by fluke. I can't remember the whole original story, but apparently he was just a stage hand or something on the X-files, and the whole Frohike thing was just kinda dropped in his lap one day.

Hmmm...you won't "watch what all of America's watching," yet you freely admit to watching The Simpsons, eh? HMMMMMMMM!!!!! Yes, the Simpsons will always be a not-at-all-guilty-pleasure of mine as well.

to pick up on that slight discrepancy in my high-horse attitude. but honest to god, I didn't watch ONE SINGLE episode of the Simpsons for well into their third season. EVERYBODY was talking about it, how good could it be? but a local tv reviewer-critic type kept going ON and ON about how great this show was, so I finally watched one Sunday night.
I have a great many on tape, now, I watch every episode rerun on the syndicated channel (two shows in a row every weeknight), and if I'm not home to watch on Sunday, I tape it for later. (oddly enough, I don't get around to taping the new shows often).

mmmmmm.....sacrelicious

I was also rambling about star trek... on scott bakula in particular being in the new series.. ooh and in the new movie picardo gets greased hehehe

I think mostly I was going on about how much I prefer the original series cuz its not a soap opera unlike the others..and it drew close comparisons with reality which I liked..
