Just an update on my future plans, for anyone who cares. I've got my hands on an ol 486 system that I'm planning to turn into a Linux server that I can run the website on from home. I'm planning to get an ADSL connection some time in the next monht or two, as well as the new computer system for my music and video work. So, hopefully by the end of this year, Gothside may actually have it's own domain! Don't worry, I'll keep the message board as is, just linked through the new and improved site once it's up. You can also look forward to some MAJOR overhauls to the main Gothside site, in particular the Zaranyzerak music page and the main index page. I'm looking to "darken it up" considerably, and just generally make it more creepy and spooky... Once I get the new computer, I'll be starting on that right away. So look forward to some cool changes over the next few months! See you on the other side, everyone...

Yeah, I managed to get my hands on a Dummies book for Red Hat Linux 7 at 75% off the regular price, and it comes WITH Red Hat 7, so I thought that was pretty cool. It looks like it's actually pretty easy to set up a web server with it, even shows you how to put up firewalls and everything. Plus the system requirements are so bloody low (it can run even on a 386!!!) that I figure it's an inexpensive way to do it. Now if only my building supports ADSL, I'll be all set! Otherwise it'll have to wait until I move to a different place...

...the same thing, hence the reason I think it would be a good system to go with. All the computers at Chapters use Windows CE for their network and cyber-cafe machines, and they are not only god-awfully ssssllllooowwwww, but they are CONSTANTLY crashing, freezing up, etc. Not to mention the fact you pay through the nose for the software to run 'em. Linux is FREE, rock-solid stable, fast, secure, etc. Sounds like a winning argument to me! Plus I have a few buddies that have done a lot of side-by-side comparisons between the two, and they swear by Linux hands-down. Actually, they say Novell is the absolute best for networking, but Linux is by far the best solution for the budget-conscious.

but sounds like a great system. Hope it won't change anything for the chronically inept with computers (ergo one nightsword) particularly since I'm stuck with the evil windows--hey, no tomatoes, I didn't know what I was doing and now can't afford to change it......cheers, nightsword

Oh, don't worry, not much will change from your end. The site'll have a new address, and it will (hopefully) look a lot more snazzy once the visual overhaul is done, but otherwise it'll work just like any other web page. The main difference will be at MY end, where I will basically be my own ISP. Meaning, I'll be hooked up directly to the Internet, rather than going through a third-party service. This is all assuming, of course, that I can even GET an ADSL connection in my area. I don't think it'll be a problem, considering the phone company two blocks away has pamphlets for it scattered all over their store...
