We are a group of friends who have come together because we share the common bond of caring for someone who has Trisomy 21. We are here to share therapy tips, medical issues, laughs, accomplishments and yes, even frustrations. We embrace what Trisomy 21 has brought into our lives. We feel that it has taught us to appreciate the true meaning of life. We count our children as blessings! We will fiercely protect them and fight for their lives to be valued just as all other peoples' are. We share our pictures, our stories and our hearts here not only to provide friendship and support for each other, but also in the hopes that others will open their minds and their hearts to our unique children and, in turn, make a better world for everyone.

UTI and a Question for Terry

May 16 2008 at 2:27 PM

Abby's Daddy  (Login Dunard2)

So Abby got cathed today and has a significant amound of white blood cells in her urine, so the ped is calling it a probably UTI and starting her on antibiotics.

He also said that a UTI in a child her age isn't too common (really?!) and he wants to do an ultrasound some point next week. Anyone know what kind of 'abnormalities' they'd be looking for?

Also -- Terry -- Meg wanted to know if you have any recommendations for a pediatric urologist? If so, could you post or email her? Thanks!!

Hi Abby's dad!

A friend of the family went down this path with their toddler (not T21). I think it is par for the course to look into reflux of urine back into the kidneys due to structural issues when UTI's present at this age. They did further testing to determine the amount of reflux and I think long term antibiotics was recommended to prevent future UTI's. The family was on the line as to whether to treat. I think they opted not to and their daughter outgrew the issue. She may have had 2-3 more UTI's and now she's better. Best of luck and I hope that helped.

Well...

It may not be TOO common, but it's not that uncommon, either, esp before potty training. I'm surprised he's doing an US after just one infection?

There are bunches of congenital renal malformations that are possible- but, I'm thinking it's a stretch unless she has had other problems that I'm not aware of.

Hugs,
Chris
