Govt urged to sort out marine park fishing 'bungle'

Conservationists are angry commercial shark fishing is still allowed in a no-take zone declared as part of Tasmania's newest marine park.

In January, the State Government reserved the waters around the Kent group of islands in Bass Strait, with half the park designated fishing-free.

The Commonwealth Government manages the southern shark fishery and has not amended fishermen's licences to prevent fishing in the new park.

Craig Bohm, from the Australian Marine Conservation Society, describes the situation as a bureaucratic bungle.

"We welcome the intent to protect this area but we do think it is misleading and thus the Government needs reminding that it will be construed as lying, or misleading the public, if they don't sort this issue out and remove that fishing effort as soon as practically possible," he said.

A spokeswoman for the Tasmanian Government says letters have been sent to the Commonwealth asking for the shark licences to be amended.

She says the Commonwealth must recognise the marine protected area can no longer be fished.
