The federal government will strengthen quarantine measures for imported prawns to protect the local industry and marine environment.
Fisheries Minister Eric Abetz says Biosecurity Australia has released revised quarantine measures to restrict the importation of raw prawns in the hope of reducing the risk of diseases entering Australia's marine environment.
"The most significant changes mean imports will need to come from sources recognised by Australia as free from diseases or concern, or be tested for a wider range of diseases if not from a disease-free source," Senator Abetz said.
Imports of highly processed prawns will still be allowed, namely battered, marinated or cooked prawns.
