A PUBLIC APOLOGY HAS BEEN REQUESTED re ABT BUNGLE
« on: February 22, 2009, 02:18 PM »

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I received an SMS from Shaun this week, it read

From Shauno

I think a public apology is required.. Or are you too proud..

Am I too proud?

No, in fact I believe a public apology is not near enough.

Firstly before I get to that though, how many of you honestly believe the ABT events were going to stay in SA?

Think about this.

What if we had 31 late entries turn up to the briefing, making a full field of 50, the ABT organisers already made their mind up to abandon Adelaide prior to flying down here, would they have changed the decision?

NO.

The lead in to September ABT event had comments like this:

from Bream.com, posted by Tournament Director Simon Goldsmith

"Just checked the list of competitors and I'm disappointed to see that we haven't even made it to 20 boats yet.

One of the possible outcomes of this less than ideal support of the event is that we may can running this event next year.

Isn't unfortunate but it's an option we're seriously considering.

Cheers

Simon.

Cheers, to what??

So should we assume this was always going to be the case??

I THINK SO.

Then this event, just held, resulting in a disqualification then reinstation.

A briefing that may or may not have missed mentioning some closed areas, well apparently at least 7 competitors new of closed zones thus reporting the infringement in question. Either way, for the organisers to chew on it for over 24 hours, then make a decision, to then backflip a week later because of a bungled briefing, cmon organisers, the competitors deserve better than that.

The lead in to September ABT saw comments like this from Yobbo
Thanks to Mr Osama Bin Laden, we now have very strict National Maritime Security laws.
Stay at least 50m from a berthed ship.
Do not under any circumstance, tie to a berth wharf etc.

I think this has been well covered, enough times to not suggest any doubt,

furthermore this,

All water craft and or persons must be at least 50 meters from all moored commercial vessels at flinders ports berths. This is in line with our Port Security Plan which is regulated by the Federal Government, penalties apply for those who dont adhere to this.

I hope this now clears any issues you were having with your fishing competition.

This should clarify things, if not for the bygone tournament, certainly for those to come, if there are any.

So back to the topic starter

I, as your proud local ABT sponsor store owner, forward an APOLOGY to all 36 other competitors that have had to compete & contend with the unorganised, unprofessional, poorly administered tournament organisers, whilst suggesting poor loyalty & a low turnout to our events.

SORRY

Remember not so long ago, over 70 competitors with Tournament ready boats showed at a Riverland Tournament, many of whom rarely if ever had targeted that species, so why is it that the ABT fails to attract such?

For mine.

Well all I can say is...If the ABT decide to have another event here in SA,then dont expect a larger turnout as I reckon they have done their dash, with the SA boys...
This isnt the eastern states where you get 50 boats plus to an event, and we have only got a small river system compared to other states..And a much smaller population compared to other states,SO WHATS THEIR PROBLEM..Forgot its all comes down to MONEY,as far as they are concerned..

Oh well, they can stick the ABT,if thats how they feel..Lets get the SABT going, and stuff them...

I've got myself a bit confused here so forgive me if I've said the wrong thing.

If ABT got an extra 31 late entries they would have been extremley happy and I'm sure would be continueing events in Adelaide.
To say they had their mind made up regardless of numbers is crazy.

They , like you are a business and need a reasonable amount of customers to make it viable.
Would you keep your doors open for only a hand full of customers ?

I'm sure ABT changed the dates for the Adelaide comp at the request from Adelaide regulars to try and get better entry numbers. Is this right ?

Now the Shauno thing has got me really confused .

Are you upset that he got DQ,ED in the fisrt place or rather that he got reinstated because Simon couldn't remember if he told shauno about the out of bounds area that you all already seemed to know about ?

Running these comps wouldn't be an easy thing,

Just to add something that I was told by my dad's best mate who is a traffic cop.

Ignorance of the law (rules) isnt an excuse. Remember that.

Some handy advice I live by....

Maybe, and perhaps he should have clarified the point with Simon @ the briefing or on the morning of the comp, but his actions were later vindicated by the ABT and the comments and accusations made about him should never have made the light of day in this or any other forum, regardless of whether he was right or wrong.

Whether his successes are the result of hard work or questionable ethics is irrelavant to me. The fact that he or any other competitor should be named and shamed in the manner that he was on a public forum is the issue I take most greivance about. It is, in my view, those comments that do the most harm to the building of the competition scene in this state.

I also take the posting of the PERSONAL MESSAGE a bit hard to swallow. Especailly as no attempt was made to address that message and its contents in the post. I assume from that it was therefore made to humiliate or belittle the writer amoung his peers and fellow competitors.

Howl me down if you must, but consider what these and other comments made on the subject do to your sport and the possibility of attracting and retaining new interest and competitors. I'm sure many of the competitors have their detractors for what ever reason, but comments like those made in previous posts and threads are best left for more private discussions.

I dont know for sure right but I think I know what Shauns profession is.(God I cant believe I'm writing in support of one AHHHHHH!) Heck it doesnt even have to be Shaun, it could be any one of us. Our actions on the day are called into question and publicly we receive a barrage of accusations about ones integrity and sportsmanship on a forum like this. Imagine if one of your customers, your employer, or your children read those accusations however unfounded they maybe. Can you see my point?

If I had made comments like those mentioned and the person in question had been vindicated, I'd be considering whether or not I should engage the services of one much more a tune to these maters than I. Especially when one considers the implications such comments could have on ones career.

THIS TOPIC IS FINISHED.

IT IS TOO PERSONAL, AND WITH EACH POST IT STRAYS FURTHER FROM THE FACTS.

I AM CURRENTLY DECIDING WHETHER TO DELETE THE WHOLE THING!

DO NOT SEEK TO CARRY ON THIS DISCUSSION IN THE
"Aust Bream Tournament, SA Round, February 7 & 8, be there if you dare!!"
