The new AP ROO aka “Panda”…

This is not APs official name to this watch.

I had picked up a catalogue from the AP centre in Singapore while they were sizing the bracelet of my latest acquisition. Going through it, I noticed that ROOs like the Safari, the Navy, the Volcano all had names and when I turned to the watch I acquired, it was called Selfwinding chronograph 26170ST.00.1000ST.01. I asked the staff what this watch was called and there was no name either. Even the endearing Bumble Bee was not named in the catalogue. I wondered where this name originated from.

Then late one night on returning home, I looked down at my wrist to find out what time it was, and it hit me. See the resemblance? Eyes, nose, whiskers(hands), ears(Chronograph pushers). I hope this does not come across too strange. Haha. Actually on looking at the mirror that night with the dark circle around my eyes, I saw another Panda.

We all place affectionate names to the people and things we hold dear to out hearts. There are the Godzillas of Nissan, the Subzillas of Panerai, the Ecozillas of Citizen, the Bumble Bees of AP, the Sumos of Seikoetc There are also the people in our lives who we love and have given very affectionate nicknames.

Well, this watch deserves one! It is strong, robust, refined, gentle, aggressive when provoked, continues to chew away at time (not bamboo) with an in-house 3126/3840, and has a heritage and history dating back to 1651 when Charles II, future King of England, Scotland and Ireland, found providential refuge in the Royal Oak tree.

Likewise the Giant Panda (Ailuropoda melanoleuca) is a conservation reliant endangered species and a countrys emblem and Olympic mascot.

Kindly do share the nicknames (if you have any) you have given to your much loved timepieces during your horological affair. It would be great also if you could share more nicknames of watches from other watch houses. Please attache photos too.

Greetings to the buddies I have met on this forum, Gatsby, Andy Lewis etc. It has been a great pleasure meeting you guys on the BWF and getting to know you!

So many friends to make, so little time.

Hope this thread turns out to be really fun.
