Coyotes?

March 22 2004, 8:22 PM

Jeff,

Where abouts in the US of A do you live? Sounds like you're out in the backwoods seeing how you're mentioning coyotes. If you're looking to put a coyote down with a 1077 you would be best to bring a friend with a more powerful airgun and work on "teamwork rythm(sp)" and fire at the same time at the head. I'm sure the 1077 can take out a something that large but it'll need a /LOT/ of head shots and /VERY/ pin-point specific shots like the eyes, ears (shot into the ear hoping the shot will enter the brain), and possibly a groin shot to slow the coyote down.

I'll be up front with you here, I have never hunted mid-sized game like that before. I consider myself a target shooter but I have shot a "prey/game" in my backyard before. To be more specific on the game I shot was crows, squirells (sp?) about the size of ones elbow to shoulder length, and birds smaller or equivelent to the size of crows. I would think to put a coyote down with a single shot on the 1077 is not impossible but I'd say the odds are 90% and higher for an animal of that size to go down without multiple or possiblely a "volley/hail" of shots landed into the above mentioned locations is very, very slim. But hey, there is always that one in a million shot there Make sure you bring a Droidz or some high capacity auto or semi-auto gun with you if you have to run because the animal is charging you.

Mid-sized game like that is always an "extra" challenge and with the limited long-range capabilities of 1077 you would have improve on your camoflauge, tactics, positioning, and stealth. On the upside some of those skills can be transferred (sp?) later on in real-life when you're in the working world. Tho, in the working world the terms would be called "business strategy". I recommend you check up on a book called "The Art of War". Originally it was used as a manual for "war" in the ancient times if I recall correctly. Alternatively you can also check out the audio book version of it if you have can find it on the web. I've never owned the paperback copy but I've heard the audio book version. I take the teachings fromt he book and put them to "business/work" use then for the "war" use.

Gotta go now. Someone needs the computer here. BTW, how old are you? I hate to get all grammar/spelling/policy nazi on you but I ask that "age" question cause just the way you type presents yourself (I'm not trying to start a flame war but I'm sure a few people will agree here on this) as "hick'ish". Please try and not post repeating/duplicate posts. It just clutters the forum.

Enjoy the day where ever you are.

DONT DO IT

April 12 2004, 8:48 AM

all you will end up doing is pissing off the coyote and get attacked.i live in rural maine and i am also a 45 years old with many many yote kills,we are loaded with the damn things to the point you cant let your kids play in the yard or they would and will get attacked,i have had them try to come in the house, attack my dogs in packs etc etc etc etc.all i can say to you is get a cartridge firearm.i have used the 357 and 45 acp with great results for close in with a pistol, for rifles i have used everything to a 22 mag, head shots are the only way with a smaller caliber bullet like the 22 mag for a clean humane kill.allthough i do own some high fps air weapons theyre is no way i would even attempt to drop a yote with it.take this advise very heavily......

Coyote hunting!

August 3 2004, 12:00 AM

Hey Guys & Gals,

The 1077 must be quite some weapon, for what it is I'm sure, I should get mine by weeks end hopefully, 8-06/7-04,
but every weapon has it's limitations. As Crosmanhunter stated Coyotes generally do run in packs as they are quite wary but I've seen them roaming on their own too here in the foothills.

I live in the foothills, just South of Yosemite Nat. Park in CA. a rural area and I've seen all kinds of different game in the area including Cougar, Bob Cat and Linx, Mule Deer, Willd Turkey, lots of Quail and Ducks etc.

Back to the Coyotes, my water well is about 200' from the house going down toward the two lane country road in front of the house and I've seen the Coyote dropings loaded with berrys about 75' from the house on the way down to the well with indications that they have come back at least a couple of times to the same spot!

There's a pond across the way, a couple of hundred feet farther with ducks etc. and a couple of nights back there must have been 6 or 8 Coyote over there raising one hell of a ruckus and you wouldn't believe their yelping. It can actuall get scary at times.

Well part of my thinking in getting the 1077 was to shoot them with the idea of stinging them and scaring them off but I'm having second thoughts about doing that as I might wound them and they could turn viscous. I'm 58 years old and in good shape. I have a few different centerfire weapons and have reloaded ever since I was about 20. I would strongly recommend that you don't individual shoot a Coyote with the 1077 unless they should attack you while your out hunting and that's your only means of defense but in every case I seen here in Ca. the Coyotes will run away as there more scared of you then you are of them.

It is also my suggestion that the smallest round you should use is a .22 Long Rifle with at least a 40 grain bullet but prefferable you should use a centerfire cartridge like a .223 or larger but due to the area you live in that may be prohibitive. A .357Sig or a .40 caliber Glock or other pistol also makes one hell of a good back-up weapon but here again your area may prohibit such items, I certainly hope not for your sake! Of course all these centerfire cartridges are very loud and will wake up the dead to be sure. Buy going out in pairs you ensure your own safety especially if you both have pellet rifles and if they happen to both be 1077's so much the better! It also isn't a bad idea to get a CO2 Pistol in .177 as a back-up while your reloading depending on how long that takes?
Things I'll shortly learn. (:~})

I would always suggest hunting with a buddy yet I can remember when I was much younger 8-10 going out on my own many times but then I wasn't hunting Coyotes either.

These hunting issues and what the 1077 can handle is part of the reason I started the thread about what type of pellets and grain weight you use as I'd like to know the heavy a pellet the 1077 will handle successfully and accurately??

The heaviest I see that Crosman makes is a 10.5 grain Round Nose which should be good when some real impact is needed as compared to 7.9 grains as an exammple.

I'm quite anxious to see what the various weight pellets will do in some tests. I don't care to kill animals unless I needed them for meat and that situation hasn't arisen yet.

Hope to hear from more of you about your various experiences and the type and weight of pellets your using and the results you had.

Take care and be safe and practice safety for your own sake and others around!

Have a clear view of your target and what's behind, beyond it before squeezing off the shot.
Don't shoot at what you can't identify!

Happy hunting/shooting!!

David S.

Best thing to kill a coyote is not an air gun. but a .22 with cb caps. there quiet but verry deadly and they are legal
