Went hunting and to my surprise...

Yesterday i went in my back yard hunting for some mongoose, i was carrying my RWS 34 with me, so suddenly i seen the tall grass "5 ft high" moving. so i aim towards the grass and out pops a little black head and at first i thought it was a black cat but then it came more out and it was a little wild pig. so i stood there still and watched him and then another one came out and then three more followed, I wondered if i shot it in the head if it would drop right there, after all the 34 is 1000 FPS. But i wasn't gonna shoot it but i was just thinking what would happen if i did. Anyways i went back to my house and got my niece and loaded my glock 35 just in case the mamma pig came rushing us, and went back to see if the mamma pig would come out but they all disappeared. So that's my hunting story for yesterday, what do you guys think.... would the RWS 34 drop the pig? it was about 12 feet away from me. Oh yeah and i'd say it was about 20-30 LBS.

welll,..

It all depends where u hit it if u walk 2 feet from it and shoot it in it's eye toward the brain it might die, might!!! U killing a wild pig or bore which ever u preffer is extreamly unlikely, it would be hard to take it down wit the glock, after 2 shots about it mite die. But i'm say enjoy the fact that u have a pig infested backyard, and if wat u say is true it's got kids how would u like it if some pig ran in and shot ur wife in the head? But if it was a squirrl i would say go for it, spawn of hell. I'm goin out today to go huntin lol hope i catch a squirril or two.

1077 sucks ass... but i love it anyhow

what you mean a glock would have a hard time dropping the pig... a .40 bullet to a pigs head would drop it in one shot or even in any vital area.

The most amazing shot I ever saw, was My best friend Justin, with a red ryder bb gun, a rabbit jumpped out of the bushes, he turned around not even aiming, pulled the trigger, and the rabbit dropped dead and killed over, he pegged it right in the back back of the head. rabbit was about a good 15 pound jack rabbit. he was about 30 feet away id say. so yeah depends where you hit him really

Don't confuse FPS with energy

June 7 2004, 7:55 AM

FPS is the velocity of the pellet FPE is the energy rating and is a static measurement of work that is stored.

FPS is used by marketing depts. of airgun makers to sell airguns to people. Usually claims 1000FPS cannot be met or they use a 6 grain pellet to meet the claims. That combo would give 13.3 FPE. A 14.3 grain pellet at 850 fps would be
22.9 FPE. A 22 long rifle firing a 40 grain bullet at 1150 FPS will produce 117.5 FPS of energy.

Now if you usually don't hunt pigs with a 22 LR why would you want to hunt them with 13 FPE airgun????

FPE = Foot Pounds Energy
V = Velocity
W = Pellet/bullet weight in grains

So to caculate FPE:

FPE = ((V *V) * W) / 450240

so FPE = ((1000 * 1000)* 6)/450240
FPE = ( 6,000,000)/450240
FPE = 13.326

I hope this helps.

"Hell Yes" a .40 Smith & Wesson caliber glock would be able to take down such a small pig. A .22 could take a 30 pound pig. I have a gun magazine which has a hunter using .41 S&W magnum and .50 AE bullets to hunt 100-300 pound wild bore. Even though a .40 S&W bullet is smaller then them, it would sure be able to take down a 30 pound pig.

I kill swiftly and with extreme prejudice.

Not sure why you responded to my answer about 1000 FPS airgun with and advertisement for Glock.

The point was the original poster seemed to be taken in by the advertisement hype about Muzzle velocity. Neither Muzzle or downrange velocity has killed anything. It's the foot pounds energy and it's impartation into the animal and shot placement that kills. Major disruption of a major organ or rapidly blood loss which causes brain to shut down is what gives one-shot quick kills.

A .40 glock at short range with good shot placement has enough energy to kill probably a 90 pig maybe more depending on the hit. Real problem when using less powerful gun is you need that near perfect shot and have discipline to wait for the shot and skill to make it. If animal moves or you twitch or bullet strikes a small branch that deflects it slightly then the resulting hit will not be proper and may not have enough energy to cause the rapid blood loss to cause a quick kill. A more powerful gun may have enough energy to penetrate and cause a rapid blood loss by either hitting an artery or just penetrate all way through and cause bloods loss where the less powerful weapon may not do so.

All I am saying is airguns in general, not all of them as there are several types and some big bores around that have all energy you would need.

It is in the Hunters own ethics that will determine if they have enough skill and powerful enough airgun to meet the needs of the prey they are after.

I have read on this Forum before that one person method of hunting squirrels with a 1077 is to shoot it from a distance and that stuns it a little and then run toward the squirrel while empting the magazine at it and by time you run close enough you have killed the squirrel.

Personally I think that's a sick person with no regard for the like or the prey they are hunting, and I use the word hunting very loosely in this circumstance.

One reason I quit poting so much here is the Format makes it hard to see who is responding to who and what messages you have responded to. The other forums make it a lot easier to follow a message thread.
