Pellet weights and styles.

Hi to all,

After doing some checking at a couple of the sites I find that we .177 shooters have quite a selection of pellet weights and styles to choose from which is great.

As was pointed out to me they range in weight from 6.5 to 10.5 grns and heaver.

So I thought it would be interesting to see which brand/s, styles and weights the different shooters prefered and why?

I like some of the Gamo styles especially the 8.5 MSP[Magnum Spire Point] but of course I haven't shot any yet but there on order. As well I'm also intrigued by the light weight 7.1 Beeman HP's.

Hope to hear what you feel works best in the 1077?

Have a clear view of your target and what's behind, beyond it before squeezing off the shot.
Don't shoot at what you can't identify!

Happy hunting/shooting!!

I use two different kinds, sometimes mixed (when I'm plinking in my
backyard) but most of the times only one kind of pellets.

I use either Magnum .177 Pointy heads or Gamo .177 Pro Match.

Pointy heads have the abillity to penetrate further but the impact
of a Match is bigger (Tested on a pigeon).

I do not know what their weight is.

Mike's reply.

Hi Mike,

Thanks for the input about the pellets your using, this a good start and as you point out, NPI [No Pun Intended] the various styles of pellets most definitely have different uses.

I just completed and placed the order for my 1077 this morning and ordered several different styles of pellets too.
A couple of them sound like what you might be using??
Needless to say all pellets are .177 in diameter.

1. I ordered Gamo Match, Flat Nose 7.5 grains, and also;

2. Gamo Magnum, Spire Point at 8.5 grains. I really like the looks of this pellet as it has three sealing bands rather than just two that most of the other styles have.

I tried to enclude pictures but couldn't seem to get the JPG's to download?? Maybe that's for paid members only?

One thing I really like about Gamo is that they include data
about the pellet so we can get a better understanding of their characteristics.

The below info for the 7.5 grain FN above and I'm sure is calculated based on a pellet traveling at 1006 ft/ps upon impact. That must be taken right in front of a break barrel to atain those speeds!

PERFORMANCE DATA:

Velocity- 1006 feet per second

Kinetic energy- 17.13 ft. lbs.

Paraffin Penetration- 1.29in.

Parraffin Expansion- 0.31

I should mention that my write-up is not meant to be an endorcement for Gamo nor am I employed by them or anyone else connected with this forum or Crosman or any of the various manufactures.

A nifty energy calculator!

August 3 2004, 11:37 PM

Hi everyone,

While poking around on the web I came upon this site that offeres a nifty energy calculator, FPE Foot pounds of Energy
for any given weight pellet and muzzle velocity. Just plug in the values and the answer appears.

Go to:
http://www.eatel.net/~amptech/elecdisc/kineticenergy.swf

They also offer printable targets of various birds and other animals, rather a unique site!

Since we're talking pellets...

Has anyone tried Crosmans' Hollow Points yet? I've been away from gunning for awhile and just saw them on the web the other day.

August 10 2004, 11:30 PM

Hi Malin,

Sorry to say I've also just seen them but plan to try them out in the future! They do look interesting alright.

I just took delivery of my 1077 today so I've been going through it to check everything out before doing an shooting. Probably tomorrow.

Sorry I could be any more help at present.
