How do you clean the barrel?

The proper way to clean the barrel is from the breach to the muzzle. With the 1077 there is no way to get a patch on a cleaning wire to pull it from the breach to the muzzle. Do I just use a jag and push the patch from the muzzle to the breach? The only other way I see to clean it properly is to take the gun apart which would be a hassle everytime I want to clean the barrel.

Does anyone have any suggestions or know a good and simple way to clean the barrel? Thanks

Mike

PS Matt, you have a great site with good info.

Thanks OC. So you clean it from breach to muzzle with the insulated wire?

Is nitro bore cleaner for firearms? Cleaners and lubricants

for firearms should not be used on airguns. They desolve o rings and seals. Airguns do not need to be cleaned after each use like firearms. You do not get lead deposits in most airguns due to the lower velocity and the rifling is not as deep and will be damaged easier.

So how do you easily clean the 1077 barrel?

June 16 2005, 6:36 PM

Thanks for the info Theodore. I intend to use pelloil (per Crosman's recommendation).

To OC, Theodore and anyone else who has cleaned their 1077 over the years, is there a method, tool or trick to clean the barrel from the breach to the muzzle without having to disassembly the rifle? Will it harm the barrel to use a rod, jag and patch from the muzzle to the breach? OC has a good idea with the insulated wire but I will need to find wire (solid or stranded; probably stranded) with the right amount of flexibility to make the tight 90 degree bend in the magazine opening and with enough strength/rigidity to push the patch to the muzzle end. Any suggestions? Thanks

Mike

Cleaning your 1077.....

You are correct, you should clean from breach to muzzle. I suggest not using a rod and pushing a patch through beacause this can damage the crown, damage the delicate rifling, and your pushing some of it straight into the exit port of the valve just to be blown straight back into the barrel. The best thing would be a pull through system. You are right it is very difficult to use a pull through without taking apart the gun. It sounds like you own a pull through kit but have you tried building one out of weed wacker cord? This is what you do:

1. Take about a yard of weed wacker line.

2.Fold one end in a loop. In this case, get it as short as possible but still be functional.

3. Wrap some floss aroun the end to hold the loop in place.

4. Pour some glue that can be used on plastic around where the floss is at the bottom of the loop so the loop is sucure.

I think i was able to get patches through with my homemade one in the begining. Now, i take apart my 1077 often enough that i just clean it then. As theodore stated you dont need to clean it that often. Although it goes against what i thought, all the airgun experts say you dont really need to clean your barrel very often, mabye just once every few months. Because of that, i just take my gun apart every 3 months or so not only for cleaning the barrel but by then its time to re-lube evrything.

Great Response

Pickleser,

Thanks for the great info and advice. Weed wacker cord? I never would have thought of using the cord. This leads me to think monofilament fishing line (100 # Test plus), SpiderWire (TM) fishing line or a combination may work as well. I am going to try to put a pull through system together with these materials.

I can handle a tear down and cleaning every three months. However, in Florida with 90 degrees F, 90 % humidity and rain sometimes, I want to pull a few patches to give the barrel a LIGHT cleaning and oiling every 2 or 3 shooting sessions. Also, with the 12 gram CO2 cylinders the barrel is cooled more yielding more condensate. In FL this means one of two things, mold or rust. We don't like either.

Thanks for the advice.

Mike

the wire i use is a solid one but it has soft plastic insulation. The steel the barrel is made of seems pretty hard! I cleaned it without taking the barrel off the gun. If your barrel can still move forward by pushing those plastic tabs at the breach of the gun, that should help it so you can remove the patch easier. Dont push the wire though to hard since it will hit that spring loaded thing the air comes though.

I have had my 1077 for years and this is the first time i cleaned it. the bore was shiny before, but now its so shiny that it's giving a huge 'hall of mirrors' effect when i look down it.

Ya high strength fishing line should work fine and you are dead on about the condensation in the barrel of co2 guns. For this reason and the climate you live in, it is a good idea to coat the barrel frequently with something that has rust protection in it. I think you metion pellgun oil before which i think will work fine. You might also want to try something specifically for bore cleaning and protection. This is what i use:

If you dont want to go through the trouble of patches every time you want to coat the barrel mabye you should try felt cleaning pellets that you dampen with whatever bore cleaner you are using.

I dont think you have to worry about rust prevention too much... arnt these stainless barrels? If it was not, mine would be a heap by now...

Im pretty sure...

there just plain steel. I have one crosman barrel that has rust on the inside so it can happen. Just be careful and clean it with something with a rust inhibitor and you should be fine. Its not that easy to get rust inside a barrel.

Greetings All,

Thanks for the info. I went to the flea market and picked up a few yards of 150 Lb Test fishing line. When I prep a pull system it will need a wire to snake it through the barrel and a handle to pull it.

Stainlee Steel will rust. 304 and 316 SS in Florida will rust even when it is not near salt water.

An ounce of prevention....... I ordered some cleaning pellets for the quick clean and lube.
