Limits of CO2?

I was thinking of how far we can go with CO2 as a propellent. I mean, is it possiable to launch a projectile at 1000fps using co2? Can co2 expand at a rate that fast? The problem with CO2 is, as it expands, it cools. So as it expands, its cooling and slowing down at an exponential rate... Or is the 800-900psi that co2 makes enough to get 1000fps speeds using a projectile of reasonable weight? I'm sure you could use Co2 to push a .5 grain projectile over 1000fps, but thats not practical for anything...

co2

Co2 is the most limited form of propellent in airguns. You can always make a tighter spring in a springer, let more air out or fill to a higher psi in a pcp, allow more pumps in a pump pneumatic. I have no idea about the expansion of co2 or how it expanding in the barrel slows it down but i do remember reading an article of a gun that shot about 940 or so in .177. Keep in mind this was a completely custom gun specifically desingned for fps and they were shooting on 90+ degree days. Your never going to get a practical gun to shoot 1000 fps with co2 shooting a real pellet. I think some custom 22xx series converted to .177 with fully moded everything can get about 800-850 on a hot day but that is basically the limit. Sadly, you never get a 1077 near that speed.

I have somthing that looks like a 22xx... maybe it was built on the same frame. Its a .50 cal tranquilizer gun a friend gave to me because it didnt work. Have you seen the movie old school? you know the part where Will Ferrell shots himself in the neck with the tranq gun? thats the gun I have. Turns out it only needed a new o-ring. But the valve in that thing is huge! maybe 4 times the size of the 1077 valve. I'm currently thinking up ways to use that vavle on my 1077, I'm thinking of cutting off the whole trigger assembly on the 1077 and adapting the the whole bottom end of the .50 cal to it. The only problems I can think of right now are i would need a new stock, or to make a custom one and i would need some way to operate the clip since the current trigger assemby does that now. Maybe i can make a lever on it that i would have to pull after each round? Sounds like im just turning my gun into a 22xx!

Wow he just gave it to you?

Those run for about $600 i think. Im not sure how you load ammo into it but could you use .50 round lead balls in it? Its probably muzzle loaded correct? You no if you can get it to use round balls and pellets and it shoots them hard enough you could do some big game hunting. Big game as in deer and wild pig (close range, though). I wouldnt waste that thing in on a 1077. If you fix it up and it ends up having enough power to push lead at good velocity (if you can load them easy) you should consider selling that thing for a lot of money. Or you can keep it and have a lot of fun with it if you can get your hands on some molds for .50 caliber projectiles. Your one lucky person!

The .50 gun i have is the (SR) pistol on this site http://www.palmercap-chur.com/body.cfm?thispageID=7&thissubID=7&thisparaID=0

Its really not that cool, and not nearly powerful enough to push out a .50 lead projectile. I actualy made a lead bullet for it to see what would happen. I shot it at a pumpkin and it broke the skin of it... and thats about it. I think i could throw it faster. You do know that people use 45-70's to hunt wild hogs... theres no way any air gun should be used for that. Those pigs are tuff and they will attack. I've never hunted them personaly, but i have heard stories.

The gun loads from the breach, it has a strange bolt/break action and the barrel is fully rifled. The gun was made to shoot a light weight dart, not a 300 grain bullet. And theres no place to get anything that can shoot out of it. I could get some practice darts, but thats going to lose its fun really fast. The gun is pretty much useless.

I stand corrected...

I was thinking it was a different model that crosman produced that was a full sized rifle based off a 22xx that was suposed to be pretty powerful. To bad.... but it would be neat to do something with that large valve. Mabye it can fit crosmans 22xx series without modification? If so it might produce a pretty powerful .22.

Heck, tranquilize that darned pig...

July 5 2005, 9:59 PM

run up on him and slit his throat w/a Rambo knife. LMAO I've actually seen a guy hunt wild hogs with dogs and then walk up to the pig (w/a pit bull attached at each ear) and very calmly slit the pigs throat w/a bowie knife. I think I'd rather jump from a tree stand w/a spear.

LIMITS OF CO2**********

July 7 2005, 9:40 PM

WELL,
I READ AN ARTICLE A LONG TIME A WHILE BACK, MORE LIKE YEARS BACK, AND IT WAS ABOUT BARNES OR QUACKENBUSH, I WISH I COULD REMEMBER.ANYWAY ONE OF THEM BUILT A CO2 .177 THAT WAS A GREAT SQUIRREL RIFLE. I BELIEVE IT WAS FOR SMALL GAME IN GENERAL BUT THE STORY WAS LIKE HE HAD AN INFESTATION IN HIS BACK YARD OR HIS NEIGHBORS. I BELIEVE THAT AIRGUN PUSHED AROUND 1000 FEET PER SECOND. I KNOW THE ARTICLE WENT ON TO SAY THE NEXT EVOLUTION WOULD BE PRE CHARGED PNUEMATIC. THOSE GUYS ARE LIKE AIRGUN SCIENTISTS OR SOMETHING LOL. I MEAN THEY CAN BUILD AIRGUNS THAT ARE BETTER THAN SOME FIREARMS, NOT TO MENTION THERE AIRGUNS ARE LIKE LOOKING AT ART.
