Will the Crossman 1077 take out a decent sized Red Squirrel at 20'? My wife & I love watching birds and have a couple of squirrels that we can't get rid of. It's gotten to where I can open the door and they just look at me - until I take a step toward them. Figure I could open the door, plug em, gut and skin em and toss them in the smoker for BBQ.

Anyway, will this puppy do the job? Hate to spend the money but hate the squirrels eveen more!

TIA for responses,

MC

PS I am open to other suggestions - have tried moth balls and fox urine. they've gotten used to both.

BTW - We are in a neighborhood so, no, I can't use a .22 rim or a 9mm. we are on the backside of the neighborhoow with 100 acres of woods behind us.

"It depends."

Not the answer you want to hear- but true. If you get a 1077 that, from the factory, will shoot reasonably close to the 625fps maximum output you can kill squirrels at 20'.

If you get one that wasn't quite 'up to spec' that left the factory- which seems to be all-too-common on 1077s, you may not be able to kill anything effectively (some guns have been seen as low as 350fps from the factory).

You can get one, try it, and if no good return it and see if the next one is better. Or, you could get a 700fps-range springer- i.e. like a Crosman 795 as an example.

Whatever you use, use 'hunting' or pointed style pellets, or maybe hollow points- but don't try killing anything with 'wadcutter' (target) pellets.

BBQ Smoked Red Squirrel... Yummy

May 11 2007, 4:46 PM

Hi MC

Before you go out shooting red squirrels you might want to check that it is legal to do so first, Especially if you live in the UK where the species is endangered and shooting them would land you a jail sentence!!

Anyways:
If you want to take out squirrels at 20ft the 1077 might just do the job, But if you want to drop them instantly, I recommend that you go for a 22cal Air rifle like the Crosman 2260 ($99.95) (http://www.crosman.com/site/listing/1045)
Or the 2260se ($165.99, With Scope) (http://www.crosman.com/site/listing/1351), The 2260se (Special Edition) is a new edition to Crosmans CO2 range that comes with a scope already mounted and a steel breach, Unlike the 2260 which has open sights, Both rifles are just as powerful, But the decision is completely up to you!! (Or your wallet).

Have fun!!
Hope they taste nice!!

Thanks guys

No, I am not in the UK - USA (Arkansas). Guess I should have stated that I am looking for the cheapest way possible to take out the critters. I can pick up the 1077 for $62.00 USD.

I am open to other suggestions.

As for being legal, these critters are a nusance and therefore pretty much legal to harvest. Squirrels are definitely not protected here!

Thanks for the suggestions. Looking forward to hereing of a cheaper solution if there is one.

MC

Cheaper would probably be to use rat traps with the right bait. Problem is, you might catch all sorts of things you don't want- other ground dwellers, birds, pets, etc.

Who's selling the 1077 for $62 these days? Most vendors online seem to be around $69.

The cheapest effective (625fps) airgun I can think of off the top of my head is the Crosman 760 Pumpmaster. It is usually around the $35-40 mark and won't need Co2 (which costs money too) as it's a 'pumper'. Looks terrible with it's plastic fake woodgrain stock- but it should do the job. Plus, you can find it at just about any retailer that sells pellet guns (Arkansas? I bet Wally-Mart probably carries it).
