That fee is absurd. I think when I was looking into it, the fee was $50 and I still thought that was too much. I'd be horrified if my information became public knowledge because the website was not better secured.
I agree with Maggie that others will emerge and I will wait on that.
Btw, DNA testing for genealogy purposes is becoming quite common and very popular among adoptees, so for those of you who regret using an anonymous donor in the U.S., have no fear. Your children will be able to find their genetic relatives, though it may take a lot of research to figure out how they are related to the people they match with through the DNA testing. Foreign donors will be a different story but Maggie's idea to start a clinic-specific registry is a really good one and no doubt will be done.
