I actually came close to losing my job due to my kids' illnesses last summer. I was counting the days till FMLA kicked in for me. I only had about 20 days to go when I got the chance to go back to a prior employer and bridge my time. So my worries about FMLA were over!!
eta: Are you counting any time off you need as FMLA time?
