I grew up in the mountains in a rural area & I now live in a city, although a typical western suburban city, not a "big city" like New York, San Francisco, Chicago, etc.
There is no question - I would choose the city.
However, you mention noise, etc. We have a decent lot with a backyard & a vegetable garden in the side yard. It's also an old, quiet neighborhood, so it's not comparable to giving up solitude for true urban living in a big, noisy city & it's not a modern tract house in an outlying suburb, either. So it's from that perspective from which I say city over country.
The way I grew up was great & I loved it at the time, but it's not for me now. Too isolating & too far from everything. My parents still live there & my mom can't bear to give it up. I like peace & quiet, but with our particular situation, I still get that for the most part.
