questions about G-d from a two year old

Hi Ladies..
Would love your ideas on this one.
I was saying our nightly prayers with DD (now 2 and half) when she asked me if G-d was a man? I responded that it was a good question but did not really answer her. She is learning about G-d in her school and in our home. It is a complicated answer for a two year old, I believe. Any good ideas on this one?
Thanks.

Someone recently posted a good response (thesameboat maybe?)

it was a good idea and thesameboat often has good ones, but I might be giving credit incorrectly... anyway, it went something like "you know sweetie, that is a really good question, and lots of people have different thoughts on this (could be death, G-D, afterlife, whatever), but no one is really certain of the answer, but in our family, we believe______, what do you think?" This might be too advanced for a 2 year old, but it should give you some thoughts anyway.

I read a children's Noah's Ark book to my (4 YO) DS and he wondered who the people on th last page were (they were Noah's family), but DS though they were G-D. I explained that G-d cannot be seen, or heard, but that he is always around us, to which DS asked, so is he invisible? Hmmmm, I said, yes I guess he is... to which DS promptly punched the air and then giggled and laughed to his hearts content....Oh brother! What am I in for happy.gif

An idea

I'd keep your answer simple now, and it can be expanded/extended as DD gets older. How about "G-d might be a woman or a man, we don't know. But we do know that G-d is all around us and watches over us every day."

We have been talking about this a lot in the last year....m

September 11 2012, 4:44 PM

with my little guy who is now 3. At age 2 though he would sit and we would read books for ages and he had lots of questions at around age 21/2...but not before as his speech was not great...now it is always, "why."

If he were to ask me whether God is a man or woman I would explain that God is loving energy that is all around us...he is like the ocean and we are the waves...he is everywhere...even in us.

We have been talking a lot about guardian angels etc lately as my little guy has a book on Believing and there are all sorts of pictures that inspire spiritual talking.

My little guy has asked me where his spirit is and I've told him that it isn't his earth suit...that when we come to earth we are in a car like vehicle that our spirit drives around in. That vehicle can come in the form as a boy or a girl...but that is only for earthly reasons...our spirit is neither gender but is energy...it is the love he gives his little sisters, it is when he feels joy and happiness...it is that quiet behind his thoughts....the silence between the music notes.

I know that he probably doesn't understand anything very well right now but I want this idea of spirit to be firmly in place before we talk about how we chose to bring him to being on the earth b/c for me it isn't at all about the egg and sperm...that is his earth suit only...it is all about his spirit speaking to me...long before we found our angel donor to help him to come into the world.

Well those are just some of my thoughts...I hope they help see it from a different angle.

Blessings from Hope

No one has ever seen God so we don't know for sure, but it doesn't matter cause he loves us all the same.

Honesty is always the best way to go. She will come to understand..
They are learning a song in her religious class about G-d..which corresponds to the idea that G-d is everywhere.
