the more i think about it the more i believe that the turkish defence industries are a malignent cancer upon the turkish economy, taxpayer and turkish armed forces.
there are several facts which make painting the turkish weapons complex in a positive light impossible.
1.the defence plants were created by public funds in the early 8o's.initially the turkish state raised money to create them by soft taxes.ie small increases on tobbaco excise, alcohol, lotteries.etc yet the defence complexes have been tax exempt.so the state puts money into them yet doesnt make a penny back.
2.the needs of the turkish armed forces have not been met.the outstanding urgency for attack helicopters tanks etc have impacted on counter insurgency against the pkk.the attack helo is 17 years late and the only way the tsk could meet the need was to buy offshelf more cobras, also more leo-2 mbt's etc
3.we hear every now and then that turkey manages to export a few low ticket defence items as somehow this is a victory when in reality over 100billion was spent to set it up only to export a few hundred million each year.
4.turkey spends 100 billion over a 10 year period to produce for her defence needs yet
a)those needs have not been met
b)buys technology from overseas to market as her own
c)hasnt invested appropiately in her own R&D and educational institutions
d)has wasted money on duplications and un necersary projects
5.turks brag how their defence complex provides many needed jobs, how so?
the reality is that defence jobs cost at least 3 times more to create then civilian jobs and industries.fact is turkey has created more jobs in korea and italy than in turkey
6.had turkey bought off the shelf she would have not only 100 billion extra in her pocket but would have had all her armed forces materiel needs met and in service and this would have had a greater impact on her neighbours and on the outcome in eastern turkey.
7.even if turkey produces all her overdue ticket items they will be obsolete by the time they enter and more money will be demanded to futiley keep them current.
8.turkish items cannot compete with other nations and rely on turkish government incentives to help them.the big incentive is to target other islamic nations, pay lip service and homage to their cause at the expense of turkish foreign interests and this only alienates turkey from her traditional allies even more.
9.the turkish defence industries has been a major factor in contributing to the huge trade defecit.it isnt just the buying of foreign technology,it isnt just buying the tools and machinery, not just the liecences but also taking away from other areas that turkey could have invested in to allow for more exports in areas like food exports, civilian machinery, civilian consumer goods and services.
10.turkish defence industries have failed to co operate JOINTLY with other nations in the production of defence products. At a day an age where even the united states is jointly developing products to slash the cost turkey is going solo.what has turkey jointly produced that isnt a one way deal/purchase?,what collaborative ventures are there?what product will be produced in turkey that has an agreed joint client?
ive painted a small, very small picture of the reality.try and prove me wrong, try and dismiss the reality.
