Turkish defense companies Aselsan and Havelsan, both based here, have won an additional 86 million euro ($128 million) contract as part of the country's MILGEM national corvette program.
In a press release Oct. 14, Aselsan said the contract is a follow-on order for the second vessel in the MILGEM program. It involves the delivery of warfare systems for the corvette.
The company said the new contract was signed Oct. 12. Delivery of the second ship is scheduled for 2013.
In a 2007 deal, the Aselsan-Havelsan team won the same contract for the first MILGEM ship.
The warfare system involves sub-systems such as integrated communications, satellite communications, electronic warfare, electro-optics, cruising, radars, air defense and weapons, fire control, self-protection, ship data distribution, and warfare management system software and hardware.
MILGEM, Turkey's most ambitious indigenous naval program, involves the design, development and manufacture of eight corvettes with a price tag of $2 billion.
