FAMAGUSTA GAZETTE 19.OCT.09 The so-called Higher Broadcasting Council (HBC), a governing body which regulates electronic media in the occupied areas, has been blasted after it decided to forbid the use of the Turkish Cypriot dialect on TV and radio.
The directive, which has been described as shameful by most popular politicians in the north, is now being actively enforced on broadcasting stations.
The HBC is now carrying out an inspection of 15 TV channels and 23 radio stations to make sure Turkish Cypriot dialect is not transmitted and the Turkish language is properly used.
The chairmen of the Republican Turkish Party (CTP), Democratic Party (DP) and Communal Democracy Party (TDP), Ferdi Sabit Soyer, Serdar Denktas and Mehmet Cakici respectively criticized the decision.
Mr Soyer accused the National Unity Party (UBP) self-styled government of trying to rule by using oppression.
You are a government which dictates even how people will talk, said Soyer.
Denktash said that they will turn the Turkish Cypriots into the only people in history which is ashamed of the way it speaks.
OCT 19 Turkish Cypriots are absolutely not in a position to protect their rights.
First, they have been knocked down by their counterpart Cypriot Greeks, secondly by the mainland Turks and finally by the international community who imposed all kind of economic and political sanctions on Turkish Cypriots.
Now, they are totally dependent on the money that would arrive from Turkey.
Once you pay someone, you can make him to do what you would like him to do.
That's true, Turkish Cypriots will soon disappear totally from Cyprus scene, then the Greek Cypriots will have to deal with mainland Turks.
Whom to blame on that? Think about it ! Think twice !

OCT 19 I am greatly saddened but not suprised by the news. It would be a total shame if Turkey manages to get rid of the Turkish Cypriots and their culture. That culture is such a wonderful blend of a variety of people and no one, know even Turkey itself has any right whatsoever to attempt to cause the Turkish Cypriots, their language and their culture to become extint. Once again, shame on Turkey and anyone who supports her on such a policy.

OCT 19 Perhaps the Turkish Cypriots are begining to see the light and they will do something about the situation. Stand up for your rights and put preassure on your government to find a solution and live your lifes as Cypriots once again. Good luck
Myname Cyprus
OCT 19 As many of you will know - there has been an attempted move here in north Cyprus - to try and ban the Turkish Cypriot language from media (instead to have "standard" Turkish on TV and other media) - this is of course cannot be allowed to happen. - so support Aysun Kahraman as she brings the language to life in her songs and music

The shame is that its not the Greeks / Greek Cypriots - its the Turkish from the mainland and the mouthpiece's that work for them in north Cyprus.
I came back home after a long time away from Cyprus and I have to say that its like living in Turkey.
This is no longer Cyprus - its Turkey - and everywhere you go all you see are Turks from the mainland.
open you eyes people!! We have over 190 mosques!!! thats more mosques than schools !! that money could have gone to actually help the people here - but instead we're being integrated into Turkey.
We are not Turkish - remember that - we are Cypriots (Turkish Cypriots).
This only legitimizes certain facts which turkish cypriots never knew until recently and that is TURKEY DOES NOT CARE ABOUT YOU, YOUR CULTURE OR YOUR WELFARE , TURKEY IS ONLY ON CYPRUS DUE TO MATTERS OF HER OWN NATIONAL SECURITY!..........and Turgut Ozal implied as much as well.........among other turkish politicians.
Enough with this TRNC nonsense. North Cyprus should be annexed to the Republic of Turkey! We can fix it so that it'll be the same way we annexed Hatay from Syria.
There will be no annexation. North Cyprus will be reintegrated with the south, many of the settlers will go home and the Turk Cypriots will rejoin the Republic. Turkey's 35 year effort to force division on Cyprus is an abject failure.
