All that painstaking work by Pheidias destroyed by a bunch of careless apes from all corners of the world in later centuries...
Much worse has happened in Egypt though, starting from the Roman period when Roman emperors decided to adorn their own cities with Egyptian obelisks and other monuments.

Its ironic that according to this reconstruction of events the Turks did least amount of direct damage to the parthenon, it looks the Ottomans merely added a minaret on top of the bell tower which was added by the Franks!

Turks of Kutahi (?) did destroy pilars, at the Acropolis siege by Karaiskakis, in order to get the lead from the joins and cast bullets. Karaiskakis was forced to give the Turks bullets himself to prevent destruction. When the Turks asked him why is he doing this replied that "those rocks are what we are fighting for..."

So, looks like the Venetian shelling and the "global thieves" Brits removing all of the better sculptures inflicted most of the damage to the Parthenon?
