What is your opinion on 105mm towed howitzers? Do they have a future?

Turkish MKEK is tasked by SSM to design a new 105mm lightweight towed howitzer by 2015, more than 100 are required.

Current leightweight 105mm of the Turkish army is the WW2 era M 101A1 howitzer.

Depends if MKEK can get their 105mm howitzer under 1,500kg then I suppose there would be logic behind it, but if its any where near 2,500kg waste of time and money..

On 12 June 1992, a Greek Mirage F-1C crashed during a dogfight with a Turkish F-16 piloted by Capt. Ilhan Filiz.

On 8 October 1996, a Greek Mirage-2000 piloted by Thanos Grivas shot down a Turkish F-16D with a Magic IR missile.

Just two days after that murder, on 10 October 1996 a Greek Mirage-2000 crashed close to Semadirek island after a dogfight with two Turkish F-16s.

Point of the story is: TUAF saved itself two missiles.

So far the Turks are able to carry rusty old M-116's of 76mm on air assault opeartions. This means any troops managing to land behind enemy lines will have minimal artillery support.

m-116

Can Greeks even land behind the enemy lines? Leave alone do they even have the balls to show up?

Midget Nutuk somehow forgets two dozen WW2 era HAF transport planes flying without escort through warzone guarded by THK fighters.
Oh,I forget.
These dumbo turco pilots had better things to do.
Like bombing their own flag ship cause of greek electronic warfare, lol.

105mm gun are valid today, especially if you need to transport it by helicopters. Also transporting ammuntion is another issue, if you you 105mm guns not only you can transport it by air, but also ammunition will be transported by helicopters. So it has quite good advantages.

I am an Artillery Reserve Officer(DEA (PB) for the Greeks) and the 105mm Howitzer is the primary form of training we get. It looks old, rusty and ineffective but a battery of 4-6 can heavily defend a region or even assault an area. Still I beleive self-propelled artillery guns and multiple missile launchers like RM-70 are much more of a force multiplier.

towed artillery is still usefull for the turks i suppose. it can be employed to shell hapless kurds and their donkeys in the east. in thrace however, it would be a death sentence for the crews to open fire against hellenic formations equipped with counter-battery radar like ARTHURS and crawling with dispersed net-centric 155mm SPA. if turkey is investing in new lightweight towed systems i guess its more evidence that they intend to keep up the national pastime of half-assed pkk suppresion in the future. try baseball, you troglodites. everyone can play and nobody gets hurt.
