Why would anyone really want to become a mod?

It's like volunteering for enslavement. You give up all your rights and have to be a decent poster; no flaming; no going berzerk; having to let your national bias go; having to take orders from Bono, etc. Bah! happy.gif

thats understood however i have a couple of questions

1)who is going to select the moderator the administrator or the members?

2) when you say that you are looking for a moderator you mean somebody who will have the right to exercise his own judgement according to the situations or a lap dog of the administrators?

thats all

Re: Looking for moderators

thats understood however i have a couple of questions

1)who is going to select the moderator the administrator or the members?

This isnt  a contest or a vote, its not about selecting someone who is popular, its about someone who can do their job objectively. That being said, it will be me who selects from those who send me an email. Please note, i am going to select ONLY people who send me an email, and not for anyone who posts in this thread only

2) when you say that you are looking for a moderator you mean somebody who will have the right to exercise his own judgement according to the situations or a lap dog of the administrators?

Quite frankly, i dont understand this STUPID question. Moderators apply the rules, end of story. Administrators oversee the daily admin functions of the forum  and also act as moderators. Judgement calls are sometimes necessary as the rule infractions arent allways black and white. The administrators want the moderators to apply the rules eveningly and learn how to apply the rules in a certain way, therefore if moderators make a mistake, they will be told so, nicely and sometimes not so nicely in the moderators forum. the most common mistake moderators make is over moderating which is something i am against and certainly something that Mike is against. IT is sometimes a thankless job, you get nothing but flack from the members, i have been called a turklover, greek hater and even and simply, not greek.

So if that means a moderator is an  administrators' LAPDOG, u need not apply.

That being said, it will be me who selects from those who send me an email. Please note, i am going to select ONLY people who send me an email, and not for anyone who posts in this thread only

so it is you who decides who can do his job objectively, therefore my question has been answered i could ask you of course about your criteria of selection and how could you be so sure that your selection will be good but i will refrain from asking such a question since it seems that you are perfect yourself therefore your judgement must be perfect as well

Quite frankly, i dont understand this STUPID question. Moderators apply the rules, end of story. Administrators oversee the daily admin functions of the forum  and also act as moderators. Judgement calls are sometimes necessary as the rule infractions arent allways black and white. it is not a stupid question it is a very rational question, the rules of course are the rules and need to be followed but a moderator should be able to distinguish where he needs to turn a blind eye to violations or not, this is something which needs good judgement and experience however the duties of a moderator can be severely hindered by the prejudice and opinions of the administrators, a moderator who is not being able to exercise his own judgement is just a puppet who is being manipulated by others so his role means a big nothing he is just a stupid pawn on the chessboard if you understand what i mean thats why i asked the question , and no thanks im not interested in becoming a moderator since i know perfectly well how things work here

there is something however that i need to agree with you, the fact that a moderator never gets a thank you for his efforts. I totally agree with you  on that, on the contrary a moderator is an object of critisism by everybody.

Re: Looking for moderators

October 25 2009, 8:21 PM

the most common mistake moderators make is over moderating which is something i am against and certainly something that Mike is against.

there is not  such a thing as over moderating, let me explain what i mean i dont know what you or Mike believes but let me make clear my own beliefs, if you see somebody on the street that you dont know him how would you talk to him? i bet you would behave yourself so would i. On the contrary on the net many people do not behave themselves because they think of the  forum and the others as object of fun and trolling reasurring themselves in their anonymity and a somewhat safety that internet provides you to insult somebody from distance something that you wouldnt do by the way if you had this person face to face. It is the false sense of liberty and security which internets provides to the potential users which encourages people to behave in a rude and unacceptable way, if the administration encourages that for its own purposes then so much the worst. You will see 15 years old kids to insult people who could be their dads or grandfathers.

The problem here is how you and Mike think that a forum should function, if it is a place of fun in the sense that everything is allowed for jokking purposes even offending somebody that you dont know then of course you will be very lenient to personal insults for the shake of the popularity of the forum. In this case what you have been doing is simply to allow personal insults which do not necessarily object or contradict the rules of the forum against a member (by the way lets not forget that you the administration makes the rules based on your own philosophy and ideals and you will be those to decide when those rules do not strictly apply in any case it is you who have the knive and the watermelon in your hands and your errors will severely affect the duties of a moderator)

, but this member sooner or later will be forced by your same rules to respond in kind.

if on the other hand you think of your forum as a place where you can exchange ideas respecting other peoples personalities then no personal insults of any kind should be allowed, just pure constructive conversations

so think about it if an adminstrator thinks that his moderator is overmoderating when he punishes somebody who offended another member and he says to him. thats a mistake because he didnt violate the rules of the forum therefore he doesnt need to be punished, then the moderator is not being able to exercise his own judgement and becomes a pawn in the hands of the administrators.

the philosophy of the administrators on how they want their forum to run ,based on what principles and values is crucial for the duties of the moderator who will be called to act based on the same values and principles

i hope you got what i said.

Re: Looking for moderators

October 25 2009, 8:59 PM

in any case, to conclude my participation in this thread since i need to get some sleep i wish good luck to the potential canditates of course needless to say that your personal luck will be depended on how much Bono likes and approves you , so you better make sure that you have a good personal relationship with him before you decide to apply.

by the way Bono, i know that i have been asking stupid questions as you said but let me be stupid as you claim and ask you another question (in fact i have never been interested in other peoples opinion about me and my questions), why a Greek moderator does not have the right to punish a Turkish member or the opposite? i thought that your impeccable selection based on your personal genious and intelligence would guarantee that a moderator will be completely objective when exercising his duties. Isnt it so?

anyway lets move on, good night Bono and everybody else.

Re: Looking for moderators

my friend

2 things to tell you

1. CONDENSE YOUR POSTS!!!!!!!!!!!!, NO ONE IS GOING TO READ THEM

2. Stop underlining, its really annoying

as for you last paragraph, which is the only thing i read, new moderators can only moderate their countrymen to ensure complete unbiasedness. now with your futher comment, even though it may sound intelligent, its not. If you have noticed, this is the internet, not real life, kinda hard to make a character call, dont ya THINK? once and if i am comfortable as i am with Kam and no need to even discuss levend, then perhaps i will give them the right to moderate others as well.

When i was made a moderator, the turks here were up in arms.

have a goodnight sleep there onty

that actually happened to me when I was doing a carpentry pre-app.

the teacher was instructing us on how to sharpen chisels and I had a brand new one that didn't need sharpening. I asked what if our chisel is already sharp?
he asked me to give it to him so he can have a look then whacked a few nice chips in it... should of seen it coming.
