I was astonished to hear that mister Papandreou plans to give greek citizenship to the legal immigrants of non-greek origin who were born and reside in Greece from many years.
As communist and christian I can not agree on that, because I believe this will create more social tension and will create more problems than to solve.
This is the worst ever speech in times of World Econimic Crisis. If he made what he promised the social sistem of Greece will be ruined and the greek citizens who vote for him from the lower social classes will be deceived. Instead of making the live easyer for the lower greek social classes he will only make them more numerous. Instead to lead the greek society to One class society, he will try to harden even more the social struggle in harm of the interests of the greek people. What kind of socialist is this?!? Why he try to worsen the social tension in this country and who tell him to do it?!? The greek immigration laws are more than clear, only foreigners of greek origin and orthodox rate can obtain greek citizenship. Why is so difficult for him to follow the laws and the common sense and try to make "wild alien experiments" in the greek reality. Someone must tell to this man that he does not rule the Wild West, but Old Greece and that his pathetic try to make politics is everything else, but not socialism!
Andreas Papandreou, the consecutive satrap of the "Great king" of America in the Satrapy of Greece...
I wonder how many years must past and the greek people to say once more "OXI"...

Lol, it is not a love affair but a necessity, because greek population is declining. More social tension will only keep those ppl non-hellenised.. Greeks will get over it, no other chance ...
For Turks, the homeland isn't Turkey, nor yet Turkistan. Their country is a vast, eternal land: Turan!

Usual verbal diarhea from our politicians. There is so much beaurocratic red tape they would be dead before they get any legal status. Just Malaka George wants to appear as a philanthropist.

For years both political parties, not just PASOK, have advocated for the citizenship status of immigrants. So far no such law has been enacted and I can assure you Conservative powers both from the political world and the Church will fight it.
As for the Khun who made this idiotic comment, let me remind you, you have 15 million Kurds and Arabs with TR citizenship and further 2 million Iranian, African and Afghan immigrants with birthrates 3 times higher than yours.

Aren't you being a tad paranoid here? There is nothing wrong with granting citizenship to law abiding, legal citizens. Especially if they were born there.

What is the current status of, let's say, an Albanian kid who was born in Greece but his parents were there illegally? Does the Albanian embassy or consulate issue him/her an Albanian passport?

I would agree with this if the immigrant population wasn't so large. But it is. Over 1/10th of the population are immigrants from albania, nigeria, arab nations, kurdistan, iraq, afghanistan.....etc., I blame mitsotakis for starting all of this idiocy back in 91 with letting in over 700k albos in one shot.

The legal immigrants (of non-greek origin) who were born (as legals) and reside in Greece at least for a decade are less than 10 000. However they will harm the fragile social system and social peace. This was mine point from the begining. I even do not talk about the ethnic reaction from the greek society (such a reaction is a rule in every society on this Earth and because of the specific history of the hellenic nation this reaction will be more than strong in the greek example).
I would like to go back to point 1. The social eruption.
Greek society is extremely democratic and the mental evolution toward one class society is the most advanced in the world today.
In Greece the rich persons are equal in the eyes of the people to the poor citizens. No one is above and nobody represent the law just because he/she is rich in contrast to the rest of the world (including US, China, Japan and Europe). Note: here I talk about high % of the people (for example: if in Greece the % of those who feel equal with every other citizen, no matter how rich he is goes around 80%, in US you will have less than 40% in the same time, in China and Japan you will get less than 30% and in Latin America - less than 20%). Because of this mental development the social tension are rising in the conditions of regressive social system, caused by the devolution of the capitalism. The resent history talks for hirself.
This mean that it`s extremily dangerous to enlarge the lower greek social classes in order not to follow the dark examples of own history of Greece (remember the Archaic epoch).
IMO Greece need to move forward to one class society by closing the gap between the different social classes and not to make the lower classes even more numerous by incorporating foreign for the greek reality ethnic and religious components who will only load up the social system and will remain alien to the rest of the population, no matter of their status.

@XXL
You are "large" as always.
The legalization of immigrants was the past of Turkey and not the future of state like Greece. The modern turkish society is nothing more than a "Baby-lo(a)n haunt". You does not have social laws, only resemblance with such laws, you do not have social system, only fakes, you do not have possitive social mentality, only social malice which deteriorate in cruelty. For a human being (human who grew up in civilized society) it`s much better to be dead than to live in society like yours.
Ataturk was good start, but sadly you need 70 000 000 more ataturks to change your degenerate mentality.
