Greece's Defense Ministry says it will scrap mandatory service in the navy and airforce in 2012 following defense spending cuts.
Defense Minister Evangelos Venizelos said Friday that during the transition these two branches of the armed forces will seek conscripts with specialist skills, including doctors and chemical engineers.
Military service in Greece is compulsory for all men aged between 18 and 45. A nine-month mandatory service will remain for the army.
In recent years, Greece's armed forces have become increasingly reliant on professional recruits.
Friday's measures were announced a day after defense spending cuts worth llion ($738 million) were revealed as part of the 2010 state budget.

ur reference to merc being a merc....ref Iraqi and Afghan exp.
--------------------------------------
Recent western experience shows that they tend to be loyal to paychecks and have a tendency to breach military protocole...
In Turkey we used Ozel Harekat (Special ops. under police force and not the red berrets under the chief of staff of TA)...hell they were effective fighters/killers/butchers, unfortunatelly driven by extremely faschistic ideology...I was not quite sure if I had rather have one of those watching my 6 or a simple infantry conscript!
Some of Turkey's dramatic losses (like the execution of 33 conscripts in 91 near Mardin) and many others were strongly denied and unaccounted for by the pkk leadership!!! Pkk eschalons insisted on special ops' involvement in such massacres to provoke massive national upheaval against the pkk...
merc. hired by the state driven my a bloodsoaked patriotism !?!?!?! or those loyal plainly to pay checks...eventually breaches military protocole and things get out of hand really...

mandatory should be shortened and pro armies should emerge. we are living in the area of professionality & high tech gadgets. but merc and pro are different things. for one i'll take the word of merc as an insult.
