WASHINGTON, June 18, 2012 The Defense Security Cooperation Agency notified Congress today of a possible Foreign Military Sale to the Government of the Kingdom of Morocco for enhancement and refurbishment of 200 M1A1 Abrams tanks and associated parts, equipment, logistical support and training for an estimated cost of $1.015 billion.
The Government of the Kingdom of Morocco has requested a possible enhancement and refurbishment of 200 M1A1 Abrams tanks, provided as part of a grant Excess Defense Article (EDA) transfer notified to Congress on 27 April 2011, to the M1A1 Special Armor (SA) configuration. The possible sale will also provide 150 AN/VRC-87E and 50 AN/VRC-89E Exportable Single Channel Ground and Airborne Radio Systems (SINCGARS), 200 M2 Chrysler Mount Machine Guns, and 400 7.62MM M240 Machine Guns. The possible sale also includes 12,049,842 Ammunition Rounds (including 1400 C785 SABOT, 1800 CA31 HEAT, and 5400 AA38 SLAP-T), 200 M250 Smoke Grenade Launchers, support equipment, spare and repair parts, personnel training and training equipment, publications and technical data, communication support, U.S. Government and contractor technical assistance, and other related logistics support. The estimated cost is $1.015 billion.
This proposed sale will contribute to the foreign policy and national security of the United States by helping to improve the security of a major Non-NATO ally that continues to be an important force for political stability and economic progress in Africa.
This package of M1A1 tank enhancements will contribute to the modernization of Moroccos tank fleet, enhancing its ability to meet current and future threats. These tanks will contribute to Moroccos goal of updating its military capability while further enhancing interoperability with the U.S. and other allies. The proposed sale of this equipment and support will not alter the basic military balance in the region.
The prime contractor will be General Dynamics Land Systems in Sterling Heights, Michigan. Refurbishment work will be performed at Anniston Army Depot in Anniston, Alabama and the Joint Systems Manufacturing Center in Lima, Ohio. There are no known offset agreements proposed in connection with this potential sale.
Implementation of this proposed sale will require annual trips to Morocco involving up to 64 U.S. Government and 13 contractor representatives for a period of up to five years to manage the fielding and training for the program.
There will be no adverse impact on U.S. defense readiness as a result of this proposed sale. This notice of a potential sale is required by law and does not mean the sale has been concluded.

of all the arab staes including the saudis, morroco has the best relationship with washington.
it was the fist country to recognise american independence from the britts.
its interesting to note the cost.200mbts (with logistics ,training etc)for 1 billion aka 5mil a pop yet the leopard sells to saudis(if it goes through) for around 15 mil a pop

More interesting part is, the "best friends" of US PAYS 1 Billion for 200 M1A1, while Greece with %85 communist population thought to get 400 M1A1 for free.

you are relatively well informed , so tell me if you know then.
how many times in the past did the US offer free weaponry to turkey, greece and others?
im not 100% convinced that the deal will go through or when but i cant dismiss the possiblity, can you?
we were both offered free A10's were'nt we?
we did both receive free M60's didnt we?
i think you know full well that from past experiences that its not beyond the realm of possibility that this deal can go through,eh?

Free weaponary times, M-60s, F-104s era is over after cold war. US has to gain something if they will give something to someone. I dont see any US benefit on the so called M1A1 deal. Do you?

true BUT are you so certain that there is nothing in it for them?
maybe theres no economic or trade benefit, maybe its not an offset agreement/sweetner for other contracts but may be ,just maybe its a political decision.
as for the cold war era comment.its not entirely true.the A10 offer was in the early mid nineties i think.

Maybe. We cant know or guess everything ofcaurse but considering the current situation, there is no need for US to give presents a country in Balkans rightnow. Turkey is still pro US country, Balkans are designed by US. Additionally, money is the GOD for a heavy capitalist country called US, so as to the recent news, it seems they find too many markets for their old M1A1s still, why would they spread 400 of them for free? But as you said, everytime, everything is possible.

"as for the cold war era comment.its not entirely true.the A10 offer was in the early mid nineties i think."

Turkey also asked to get for Sprueance and 2 more Perry recently but we rejected. Sometimes the reason is to sell spare parts for old junks to maintain draining money. I have such a feeling on our Knox issue also.

Greeks ,why do you want them for free?
instead of getting them free but after that, paying lots of money for maintenance, why dont you try to produce it yourself. You can create an industry and provide jobs to lots of young people. You can apply all the things you learned from this processes to other areas and have a stable economy. You have no interest of getting them for free. You wont go into a war with Turkey,so what is the point of getting them.instead you can start to produce your own tank your own ship.

There ain't no such thing as a free lunch.
