This remind me When Mustafa Kemal entered Smyrna in 1922, some Turkish women had laid down a Greek flag and asked him to step on it. Because the greek generals did same the Turkish flag when they occupied the Izmir. Buthe refused to do so, he did not want to insult the enemy flag.

Did the Greeks Generals really step on the Turkish flag ?

Did any newspapers of the time record this incident ?

If not, what is the primary source(es) for this story ?

I dont know what you think but I always take axishistory.com as a reliable source..Plus you may find lots of English stuff through internat about that flag stepping incident.

Please take a look;perhaps helps a bit.. An Aussie asks what you have asked..

Thanks. I was wondering if Greeks ever bragged about it and put it in their newspapers at the time........ or something like that.

Yes, I like the quality of the posts at axishistory.com.

Honesty, I would recommend you seek on Greek written sources. This is a serious historical event.. A place where people swearing each other 'Turdgay-Gayreece' may not be the proper place at all.

And just found that article, seems like written by A Greek academic person. You may like it...

It was not the greek general who step over Turkish flag but King Konstantine when he entered Izmir in 1920 or 21 to take the command of the greek invasion army. The Izmir Rums lay down a Turkish flag for him to step over. They payed this treason with their lives.

Izmir Rums greeting their "victorious" King in 1919. These people lived with us side by side for centuries and they sold out their neighbors overnight.

Happened in Istanbul too when it was under occupation, griks and armenians hanged british and french flags out their window.

Revenge was sweet.

No matter the era, whichever the society, people always gaze at the stars when young. Then they stretch out their hands and try to catch them. And then one day, they realize their arms are not long enough to catch the stars, and thats when they grow up.

"Revenge was sweet."

Exactly, they paid what they did to their own homeland. Fear of Turkish anger coded on their DNA from now on...
