4,000 Cham Albanians Hold Protest in the Greek-Albanian Borders Claiming their Land Back
By Areti Kotseli on July 1, 2012 in News

4,000 members of the Organization Chameria comprised of Albanians allegedly forced out of Greece held a protest near the Greek-Albanian borders in Thesprotia asking for abolition of Greek laws which prevent them from access to their land and properties in the Chameria region (parts of the coastal region of Epirus in southern Albania and northwestern Greece).

Cham Albanians gathered outside the Customs Office of Thesprotia (Mavromatio Sagiada) on the Albanian side yelling and protesting for their violated right to return to their homeland and claimed that they have suffered genocide attacks from Greeks.

Leader of the Cham party PDIU in Albania, Shpetim Idrizi, repeated his request addressing the Albanian government that the matter should be dealt with as soon as possible and that Cham Albanians rights to repatriation should be supported by any means. He did not hesitate to accuse Greece for a blatant violation of human rights for not allowing Chama Albanians to visit their ancestral land.

Prior to marching to the Greek borders the allegedly 4,000 Cham Albanians had paid a visit to their Genocide Monument in Sarandë. There, they planted an olive tree indicating that a greater monument will be built for the victims of the genocide.

Greek authorities had tightened security measures as a precaution and men of the special squad team had arrived at the scene to protect the Customs Office during the protest of the Albanians.

"In the post-war years a number of trials concerning the war crimes committed during the Axis occupation occurred, however not a single defendant was arrested or imprisoned, as these had already fled the country. During 1945, a Special Court on Collaborators in Ioannina condemned, in absentia, 1,930 Cham collaborators to death (decision no. 344/1945).[26] The next year the same court condemned an additional 179."
