1. Tourism on the island of Crete was up by 4% this year
2. Restaurants, bars, cafes etc were packed every single day of the week with both Greek and foreign tourists.
3. The cost of food seemed pretty cheap to me. Especially locally produced fruits and vegetables were dirt cheap. 1/2 kilo of bread was 1 euro. Eating out was dirt cheap too. I never payed more than 48 euros at any restaurant for 2 people to eat fresh seafood. At the fish market you could get 6 large sea bass for 5 euros.
4. Went shopping with the gf and to my surprise noticed all clothing stores were quite busy with Greeks shopping for clothing items.
5. Greeks were more conscious of buying Hellenic products instead of imported products
6. Saw a handful of anarchist students (4-5) blasting heavy metal music while BS'ing over the mic in the main square, but everyone was ignoring them.
7. Hiked the Samaria Gorge and saw tourists primarily from Holland, Sweden, Poland, Italy, and the USA.
8. Every beach I went to was packed. Beach bed rental was 6 euros and they were all packed.
9. Greek customer service/efficiency has improved dramatically. I noticed that customer service has become much friendlier than before.
10. Generally speaking I didn't notice any financial "crisis". As I mentioned earlier all cafes, restaurants, bars were packed even on weekdays. I never saw any soup lines or Greeks begging for food or money. On the beach you would occasionally see a Paki trying to sell you pirated DVDs. Also, had another Paki beg me for money while at a stop light and a Gypsy kid trying to wash my windshield for money.
11. Greece has great potential in the organic food industry and in textiles. Greek organic food is the best tasting in the World based on my travels. Also, our textile industry has great potential. I can buy a 100% leather Greek made belt for 3 euros, while the same belt in the USA costs 30 dollars.
After my recent trip, I am very confident Greece will come out stronger from this crisis. Once Greece manages to reduce the public sector, cut spending, and allow private industry to flourish we will take off once again. The average Greek is highly educated with multiple degrees and fluent in 2-3 languages in some cases with fluency in English almost a given.
There is great potential in the energy sector from solar and wind. Construction seems to have slowed down somewhat although I still noticed buildings being constructed both in the city and in tourist areas.

I guess tough love has helped the tourism industry Kalli.. but with unemployment at 24% and the most vulnerable being hurt and business confidence at a all time low.. its a little early to claim that the austerity measures have been a success.. But its a positive assessment none the less..

Well, based on what I was reading in the media I was expecting things to be completely different to what I experienced.
Of course my relatives complained about the punitive measures the government is taking with regard to taxation, but I didn't see anyone starving either. In fact, quite the opposite. They have a better quality of life than we do here in North America.
I think Greece will pull out of this a lot leaner and stronger. This time around every business I visited was issuing receipts. Transparency is also improving.
Greece has great potential in many sectors. Time to roll up the sleeves...

From what i hear i think the same.. The problem is that all this austerity has produced NO growth NO employment and NO extra government revenue in fact the opposite.. it will eventually.. but it'll be a long time before Greece stands on its own feet.. it needs further help and sacrifice I'm afraid..
Any cool photo's to share..

Not yet, but I should have something in the next few days.
Once the government reduces the public sector, fights corruption, and also cuts spending it will be able to reduce tax rates, VAT, and income taxes which will eventually increase private sector liquidity and subsequently increase consumer spending.
One thing that surprised me a lot was that many Greeks made a conscious effort to buy Hellenic products.

Probably a mixture of both patriotism and anger. I think the crisis has shaken a lot of people and they have changed their shopping habits as a result. In clothing stores I noticed most people were buying clothes made in Greece.
Speaking of patriotism I was impressed by the number of Hellenic flags I saw flying at homes in my neighborhood. I counted around 12 Hellenic flags flying in my neighborhood alone. While in the past no one would be flying a Hellenic flag because people tended to associate you as a "philohountiko" in the past. Now, no one cares and flies it 24/7 even with the orthodox cross at the top of the flag pole.

...well its a good thing that the Greeks have funnelled all the racism and derogatory attacks by the germans and the rest of europe into a positive.. about time we stop relying on others and started looking after our OWN interests for a change..

Crete will be the first island to rise the seperation flag when things are worse for greece, you will see. And Turkey will gladly support those seperatists who are willing to live in a better life standard without living under weak fachist greece, by any kind of equipment they need for the future of friendly Cretan Republic.
This cali homo probably went to Crete to sell its azz. The girlfriend story is just a coverup story.
I saw Kali's picture. He looks like an Arab and he probably scared the guests on the island with his arap gypsy look. You got probably kcked of the island because you were bad business for the Island. Go sell yourself on another place. Crete is the only place left where business go's semi good and soon it won't belong to Greece any more. Your optimism that everything is going to go right is heart warming but we know Greeks for 500 years and we can tell that in the darkest hours of Greek history with a 9 inch pole up your ***, you still find a way to say everything is ok.

Imbecile and delusional TurkoArab criminal, the only separatists I see are Kurdish freedom fighters butchering your "born warriors" on a daily basis. In the meantime, Hellenic flags fly proud on the largest Hellenic island of Crete on every other home.

I took around 650 photos, but I haven't uploaded any yet. I'll post photos as soon as I can. Speaking of TurkoArabs there were a few NATO warships in Crete (German, French, Turkish) and I did see a couple TurkoArab sailors on the beach. They were behind me speaking in Turkish and I picked out their language since I can tell when someone is speaking Turkish.
They were average height, one was pretty dark like a gypsy while the other was dark. Both had black hair and brown eyes. They had bellies and appeared weak and soft.
If this is who we will have to fight, I will laugh as each Hellene can crush 2-3 of them without even breaking a sweat.

Do you really think your little fag report from holidays has ANY credibility while we're still waiting on you after years to post your video about your chikenchit bid with Kanuni? You're a proven and certified liar. The entire world press is saying Greece is going under and you're attempting to refute that by saying "people are buying clothes" ? What kind of a complete moron are you?

Acually, Cretans are true Greek haters who forced to forget their identity by fachist greek governments for a century. Since (unfortunately) there is no freedom of speech and a proper democracy in greece, you can still see the greek flag on the island instead of their original one but day by day i belive, Creatans will have the caurage to mention what they want as Ikarians did last week.
Imbecile and criminal biatch. That flag was imposed on Crete by the Great Powers who forced your homo Sultan to accept Crete as an autonomous territory.
Of course we revolted against such ridiculous notions, declared independence and UNION with Mother Hellas. Soon after all the Cretans who had converted to Islam were thrown out and the island was cleansed of any traitors.
We sent all the filth packing to Izmir.

One of a loser of the known nation, Thats a great admit from you that you losers has nothing to do while getting your independence and other territories but you owe them to those "great powers" You even dont have a proper country to live. You did get those lands for free as a present by others, will lose them in the same way. The only thing which keep you united was the "other's" money, now the "other's" money will cause you the seperation. Get over with that.
