Greek beaches among the best of Coastal & Marine Union!
... for Greek beaches. Ierapetra, Samothraki and Allonisos stand out in the top20 among 1000 popular destinations. Ierapetra came 2nd, Samothraki 7th and Alonnisos 17th.
The ceremony of EUCC took place in Torres Verdas in Portugal. The panel of critics evaluated 1000 international tourist destinations from Finland to the Mediterranean including all tourist countries. Only one hundred destinations were selected.
The information was collected from the archives of EUCC (Quality Coast BasiQ Database).
Information was gathered from about 30 indexes in the fields of:
-Nature and Biodiversity, NAT,
-Identity and Cultural Heritage, ID & C,
Most of the information came from European data banks e.g. EUROSTAT, EEA, national statistical data, and from satellite images that were appraised.
The beaches of Ierapetra came second in the overall standings; first in the Socioeconomic category and second in the Environment category.
Samothraki reached the 7th place of the final results; third in the Nature and Biodiversity list and second in Identity and Cultural Heritage.
Alonnisos came 17th while being 1st in the Nature and Biodiversity category and 4th in the Identity and Cultural Heritage.
Quality Coasts catalogue suggests that in Ierapetra:
- it is worth visiting the Venetian Port, the Kapsa Monastery, the Lake Vramiana.
- The small, island Chrysi (golden) is distinguished for its natural beauty, its beaches, the pine forest, the sand cliffs and the waters that are ideal for underwater fishing. It is noted that many of Ierapetras sand beaches are awarded each year with a blue flag for their clarity.
According to the same catalogue some of the best places of Samothraki are:
-The Mount Feggari (moon), which is the highest peak of the Aegean (1611 m). The mountain is ideal for hiking with two Natura areas, many water-falls and stunning views.
-The Pantheon of the Great Gods, a religious ceremony site of antiquity where the statue of Nike was found.
-The old capital of the island, Hora, pure and well preserved since ancient times, it is characterised from narrow alleys, traditional houses and amazing sea views.
-The Archaeological Museum and the Museum of Folk Art for the lovers of culture and history.
-The abundance of wild herbs, including oregano, thyme, mint, chamomile.
For those thinking of visiting Allonisos the Quality Coast guide suggests:
-The National Sea Park that includes six smaller islands. The Park is extremely important for the protection of the endangered Monachus-Monachus seal. Lovers of wild nature will enjoy the richness of the flora and underwater life.
-The Hora, the capital of the island with the old white-painted houses, the small porches packed with coloured flowers and the unbelievable views from the port.
-The plethora of beaches and the exceptional quality of the water.
-The Folk Museum and the Byzantine-era churches; characteristics of the rich cultural heritage of the island.
