... for Greek beaches. Ierapetra, Samothraki and Allonisos stand out in the top20 among 1000 popular destinations. Ierapetra came 2nd, Samothraki 7th and Alonnisos 17th.
The ceremony of EUCC took place in Torres Verdas in Portugal. The panel of critics evaluated 1000 international tourist destinations from Finland to the Mediterranean including all tourist countries. Only one hundred destinations were selected.
The information was collected from the archives of EUCC (Quality Coast BasiQ Database).
Information was gathered from about 30 indexes in the fields of:
-Nature and Biodiversity, NAT,
-Environment, ENV,
-Identity and Cultural Heritage, ID & C,
-Socioeconomics, S-E.
Most of the information came from European data banks e.g. EUROSTAT, EEA, national statistical data, and from satellite images that were appraised.
The beaches of Ierapetra came second in the overall standings; first in the Socioeconomic category and second in the Environment category.
Samothraki reached the 7th place of the final results; third in the Nature and Biodiversity list and second in Identity and Cultural Heritage.
Alonnisos came 17th while being 1st in the Nature and Biodiversity category and 4th in the Identity and Cultural Heritage.
