Turkish Soldier Killed and 13 Injured in Clashes with Kurdish Rebels

Kurdish fighters have killed one soldier and wounded 13 in their latest offensive against Turkish government troops.

Clashes broke out when rebels belonging to the outlawed Kurdistan Workers Party (PKK) attacked a military outpost near Eruh in the province of Sirt.

The PKK fighters retaliated after an attack by Turkish fighter jets and helicopters on rebel outposts, which forced villagers to flee their homes.

The latest upsurge in violence between the two sides erupted in July but is part of an ongoing conflict which began in 1983 and has claimed 40,000 lives.

In addition to their base in Turkey, the Kurdish community occupies substantial tracts of land in neighbouring Syria and Iraq.

Kurds in northern Syria are reported to have gained control of several towns amid the uprising against embattled president Bashar al-Assad - prompting Turkish prime minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan to threaten military action if Syria's Kurdish region becomes a PKK sanctuary.

Movement towards Kurdish independence

Meanwhile, a minor diplomatic crisis has erupted between Turkey and Iraq, following a surprise visit by Turkish foreign minister Ahmet Davutoglu to the northern Iraqi city of Kirkuk, home to around 850,000 Kurds.

Turkey fears Kirkuk could become a nucleus for a wider movement towards Kurdish independence.

Davutoglu said on his Twitter account that he was "proud to be the first Turkish FM to visit Kirkuk in 75 years".

"Kirkuk will be a city where our Arab, Kurd and Turkmen brothers live in peace forever," he said.

But Iraq's foreign ministry said Davutoglu's visit was not appropriate and constituted "interference in the internal affairs of Iraq".

4,000 PKK Fighters Transferred to Syrian - Turkish Border

[linked image]

An official at the Iraqi Islamic Supreme Council said that about 4,000 PKK fighters are being transferred to areas north of Qamishli, near the Turkish border, an excuse that Turkey may claim to intervene militarily.

During a seminar held on Thursday, Baqir Jabr al-Zubaidi said that the fighters were well-trained.

The Syrian regime is trying to keep on Damascus and Homs for important logistical considerations, based on that Homs is the knot and the only corridor to access the coast, Zubaidi pointed out, adding that the rest of the Syrian areas could be controlled.

Radio chatter between PKK members in Hakkari and North Iraq revealed that, if the terrorists taking part in the operation return to Iraq, they'll be killed. Essentially, they're in a forced suicide mission..

Turkish troops and Kurdish rebels 'killed in clashes'

At least 19 people have died in southeast Turkey after Kurdish rebels launched an attack on a Turkish border post, according to local media.

Rebels fired rocket launchers on an army post in Hakkari province just after midnight, NTV in Turkey said.

Turkish military jets are pursuing them and bombing their escape routes, NTV said.

Several thousand Kurdistan Workers Party (PKK) rebels are believed to be based in hideouts in northern Iraq.

According to the governor for Hakkari province, Orhan Alimoglu, six soldiers, two village guards and 11 Kurdish rebels were killed in the attack near the village of Gecimili.

He said 15 soldiers were injured in the incident.

The number of clashes between the PKK and the Turkish armed forces has risen in southeast Turkey over the past year.

A series of clashes in June left dozens dead.

The PKK is classified as a terrorist organisation by the EU and the US.

It launched a guerrilla campaign in 1984 for an ethnic homeland in the Kurdish heartland in the south-east of Turkey.

It has now dropped its claim to an independent Kurdish state, but says it is fighting for autonomy and the cultural rights of the Kurdish people.

Conclusion: 8 Turkish soldiers dead and 15 injured, Kurds lose 11.

The point is who have lose more people? We all know how Kurds reproduce population, LoL.

So the PKK men are on a suicide mission? PKK threatens to shoot them if they retreat? Yes , sure......

In this case however, they have another option: Surrender to the Turks. In this way, they stay alive. But they do not do that either. Why ?

The Turks need not worry. The Kurds will abandon the battlefield, after they embarass the Turkish Army a little more.
