Here's a question that I've been pondering for some time:
How come Marvel or DC hasn't come out with a live-action show ala Zena or Hercules? The folks at Renaissance Productions made super-powers believable, and that's half the battle.
I'd love to see a show with Captain America or Iron Man, or even a solo X-men thing with maybe the Beast or Angel. Or heck, even the original team!
I've been thinking about just how damn good a New Mutants series would be after seeing X2. But what network would pick it up? WB? Not likely. UPN? God I hope not. A lot of the big 3 are picking up futurist dramas for the 2004 season. Hopefully, if those are successful, we'll see some quality X-Spinoffs.
No, I just didn't "connect" with any of the characters. That may have more to do with the real pilot not airing until November, so when the first episode aired in September I felt like we jumped right in without introduction. No reason to care.
I didn't like the shaky cam stuff at all. It's done to great effect on NYPD BLUE and 24, but on FIREFLY it had the effect of making me woosey.
I didn't like the engineer girl AT ALL. I lived in the South for a long time and her's was just about the WORST Southern accent I have ever heard...and I've seen a ton of community theatre.
I didn't like the mixture of the old west vs the new Sci-Fi. I found it nearly impossible to believe that if in our world gangs get a hold of the most up-to-date weapons for street fighting (uzis, AK47's and the like), but in FIREFLY bandits had to rely on 200 year old guns?!?! That didn't equate in my head at all. I mean, even third world countries here have people living in huts and still using horses as their main transportation, but people have access to and purchase weapons that are only a few years old. The way it's portrayed in FIREFLY, it would be akin to people in third world countries still loading muskets with gun powder and musket balls.
I liked the cast for the most part (my exception is above). I did have a problem with the sister of the doctor as well. She seemed to be a knock off of Drew from BUFFY, spouting off rhymes and riddles but not making a whole lot of sense. I just didn't like the camera work and thought the project, as a whole, suffered from not taking its time to introduce us to these characters thereby giving me (as a viewer) a reason to care.
Matt, I know you and I disagree about "Firefly" and that's fine. I don't hope to change your mind but there is an element to your critique that is based on a false premise. I'm currently re-watching the series (for the second time) and I've listened carefully to Kaylee's accent (that's the engineer of which you speak). She has no discernable "southern" accent. And I have no idea how you get this impression. Her vowel sounds are rather flat and speak more of "plains" speak. Kansas by way of the Ohio valley. You may wish to continue to trash this commendable, if short lived series, but lay back on that particular criticism. It just ain't so.
I remember the Super Boy series of the late 80s', I believed three different actors got to play the character during that serie's run. But, I used to imagine at that time, what if there would have been a TV live-action series about the Original X-Men (Cyclops, Marvel Girl, Beast, Angel, Ice Man). Also, wearing their old black and yellow outfits and having the series have a retro look. It's too bad, that all we can look to is Mutant-X. I can't watch that series anymore. They killed off the leader and the main villian. The rest of the characters are too perfect looking. This series needs alot of help.
One in the first season, another in the second. The second guy was a lot better...although I believe he was 30 at the time he was cast.
I remember liking the show a lot after the second season when it started regularly featuring villains out of the comics, but I was on the cusp of adolescence back then. Not sure what I'd think of it now.
........for pretty much the same reasons as Matt and John. It is something I tried to like and something that I should have liked, but I just couldn't do it.
But then again, I'm not liking Tru Calling nearly as much as some of you guys do.........I don't even think Ms. Dushku (sp?) looks as hot as she once did. Maybe I'm sick or something........
.........that I would be the next one she couldn't save. And then you'd have my death on your hands, wishing me dead and all that. And you think the Bad Byrne stories are bad now? I can just see those headlines now.....
As I recall, that was also the source of a lawsuit against Marvel by Fox (Mutant X being licensed to another production company when Fox was supposed to have "exclusive" rights to the Marvel mutant franchise)... possibly another reason they've stayed away from it!
Edited to add parenthetical explanation!

Strangely, I'm just the opposite. I find her more attractive when she's not playing the "bad girl" in Buffy or JAY & SILENT BOB STRIKE BACK. I caught "Tru Calling" for the first time last week, and found her to be terrifically engaging, both in beauty and as an actor.
Part of what kept me away from the show was the bad-ass attitude she'd been typecast as in recent projects. I'm really glad that's not the case with this show.
