"Don't get too excited. Maybe you're not invited to my Action/Adventure dreams."
--Andrew Bird, "Action/Adventure"
It's really very simple -- those these people will be themselves the first to deny the very simplicity of it.
These are not people who are capable of independent thought. They memorize buzz words and phrases, and they use them to sound "hip". No actualy truth or even sense is required in these phrases. Recall my reference to a "typical Byrne/Claremont story". There is no such thing, yet these people will seize upon such a phrase because it sounds hip, and they will use to to make themselves sound hip -- at least to others who are as absent of original thought as they.
They despise comics, and they despise themselves for not being able to let go of the hobby. The habit. They are addicts, in the worst possible sense. They cannot build, they cannot create. Instead, they seek to destroy, seeing in that a kind of creation. If they cannot make the building, they can at least make the big pile of rubble.
They have always been a part of fandom. They were the fringe of the fringe of the fringe. As fandom has shrunk, the fringe has moved closer to the center. The internet has given them two things: a voice that cannot be silenced, and utter anonymity. They are small minded, talentless, unthinking cowards.
And every day, as the Companies and the retailers make stupid, brainless moves that drive away more readers, or make it more and more impossible for new readers to find access, they increase in proportionate numbers.
I'm reminded of a moment in the film (and maybe the comic) GHOST WORLD:
Enid (Thora Birch) vows to get Seymour (Steve Buscemi) a date, somebody who shares his interests, and he grumbles, "I don't want to meet somebody who shares my interests. I hate my interests!"

******
Most excellent line! My friends and neighbors sometimes try to find a match for me, seeking someone "like" me. "Dear god," I will say, "why would I want someone like me??"
