You don't generally have to do anything to earn beads. You just have to catch them. One of the most common misconceptions people have about New Orleans during Mardi Gras is that you have to show skin to get beads. The truth is, that only really happens on a short strip of Bourbon Street in the French Quarter, and it's still illegal and you can be arrested for it. 99% of the celebration is spent in the rest of the city in settings suitable for families. As a teacher, I often have to correct these thoughts in students whose knowledge of Mardi Gras comes from watching Cops, Jerry Springer, or MTV. Sensational television gives the general populus the wrong idea about Mardi Gras.

Hmmm, that means tomorrow is Ash Wednesday. That means everyone will be sufficiently contrite and penitent tomorrow, right?
