Were these all reprints? or were there new stories in them?

it was like 491-the end of the series.

There was a mixture of both. I had a couple and I know that one had a new Challengers of the Unknown story.

The new stuff was typically leftovers -- odds and ends from cancelled titles. My understanding is that the digests had very low budgets and that very little material was commissioned specifically for them.

Sometimes it worked the other way, too -- the Superman/Challengers of the Unknown team-up that ran in DC COMICS PRESENTS combined Toth pages (drawn for the digest) with new Kirby pages (drawn for DCCP).

Oddly, I think the Challs stuff was commissioned specifically for the digest, but I'm not certain.

Adventure Digests

March 3 2004, 11:42 AM

The digests were primarily reprints, but there were some new stories. 491-492 featured a new Shazam story by Bridwell/Newton continued from World's Finest; and 495-497 featured a new Challengers story by Rozakis/Toth.

The reprints were nothing to sneeze at either. From 491-503, you got Aquaman 40-52, Spectre 1-8 (and his Showcase 60 & 64 appearances), Toth Black Canary, Golden Age Captain Marvel reprints, and Golden Age Kirby Sandman reprints, and the Legion from its first appearance in Adventure 247 through Adventure 318.

TONS of great reading. I miss the digests.

Best Regards,

Ok so its not too many stories. They are rather expensive and hard to find. Plus i despise the size. They are really difficult for me to read. I have most of teh issues they are reprinting.

But i would like to have the original challengers story.

thanks a bunch for all the info

Challengers of the Unknown

Minor correction (in case someone wants to track it down) - the story started in #493, not #495.

(It's an origin story, in case you're wondering.)

I was only referring to the Toth portion.

Buy these!

You're kidding, right...? These digests reprint some of the more interesting and obscure early 70s Adams and Aparo issues out there, and at reasonable reprint prices. Good luck finding Aquaman 48-50 for less than about $20 a pop (and ragged out!) The format may be small but the stories and art aren't.

I got aquaman 48-50 for under 10 bucks each.

The digest comics are all Insanely expensive usually 20+ each. Plus they are small and honestly hurt my eyes when i read them.

Ebay is your friend for good deals on silver age stuff.

I just won Green Lantern 59 in F/VF for get this.. 16 bucks including shipping. And the same week I got GL 40 in VG for 21 bucks with shipping. those are volume 2(hal) issues . and btw completes my GL collection ))

if you are willing to wait and look long enough eventually you will get a steal.
