JB, am I wasting my time playing "Where's Barney"? (well, yeah, I'm supposed to be working now, so some people would say "yes" regardless of the outcome).
They also have images of some of the other pieces which will be included in the book up on that page. Buy the book thru Dave's site as more of the money will go to him.
On a sadder note, Dave Cockrum has suffered a relapse (not sure if this info has been posted here or not). Find out more at Neal Adam's site: http://nealadams.com/news2.html
That's the best drawing of Colossus in the last ten years at it didn't even come out of Marvel! Nice! I like the lines on the arms and legs, something that's missing from the Ultimate version.
Yep...that's pretty good. But honestly John....couldn't there be a little more detail? Geez....I only counted 700 individual segemnts on that mass Peter is holding! Just another example of why people say you just don't care anymore.
It is nice to see Collossus and Nightcrawler in their original costumes. The "new" X-men circa 94-143 had some of the best costumes. Much better than the leather look.
Are the pieces from this book going to be auctioned off?
Shaun
As I understand it all the pieces from the book will be auctioned off. I have heard Heritage Auctions will be handling it. Just goto Dave' site to find out more, http://davecockrum.net
Man, John, that's a great piece of art! You should kick in the doors at M****l and demand to work on one of the X-books! Then, I would have a reason to start reading an X-book again.
Also, is it me, or does anyone else, after looking at this pin-up, really miss the real Marvel Comics?
It's torture to see these once great and wonderful characters so wonderfully rendered by an artist of JB's caliber. Truly an exquisite piece of art JB. I sorely miss you playing in the MARVEL universe.
That's an excellent piece. Colossus was one of my favorite All-New, All-Different, X-Men. Along with Nightcrawler. I'm sorry to hear once again of Mr. Cockrum's condition.
That picture is a fantastic tribute to Dave Cockrum! To me only three artists have really done justice to the post reprint X-Men: Dave Cockrum, John Byrne, and Jim Lee. Speaking of Mr. Cockrum, does anyone know why it took so long for John Byrne to start doing the covers to X-Men? If I remember correctly, Dave Cockrum did the covers to X-Men #108-111, George Perez #112, then finally John Byrne with #113. For a bi-monthly book, that means JB was on the book for almost a year before he did a cover to his own book. Insight anyone?
It's been told in another thread so I hope this doesn't constitute me trying to speak for JB...but, TPTB at Marvel back then didn't feel JB was good enough to do the covers at first so they had DC do the covers while JB did the interiors.
Wow!
Whenever I see some new X-Men artwork done by you John, brings back a lot of fond memories from when you originally did the book. Does something like this bring back any of the old days feel for you?
JB : "Interesting. I don't think there are more than a dozen (if that) straight lines anywhere in that drawing, so I wonder what you see as "angular"?"
Straight lines or not, angular is the word that best comes to my mind to describe the Simonson style that some aspects of this picture (Colossus basically) are vaguely reminiscent of to at least two beholders here.
Perhaps Colossus's armour accentuates the impression.
Maybe it is just that your style has changed considerably in the long years since you handled these characters.
I find your depiction of Nightcrawler quite interesting here too!
I wonder if the editors at Marvel ever had a meeting about trying to establish some standard of exactly how far apart the "rings" on Colossus' armored form should be. When I draw Colossus, I always do it John Romita Jr. style, with about three times the distance between the segments.
JR Jr. was, of course, the artist on X-men when I started collecting the book, so his version of the X-Men will always be "my" version as well.
