The wife and I visited the Dali Museum in St. Petersburg last week. Anyone who enjoyed the Darkseid on the covers of G3 might get a kick out of the original "vanishing head" trickster.
I bet it's because the image is so scaled down. If we were to look at the full-sized version, I bet it would not be sticking out like a sore thumb so much.
The smaller size does make a difference. Also I think the tint of this particular photo (slanted way toward the yellow) emphasizes the contrast with the white figures that make up the lower half of the face. It's much less obvious on the original -- I even had to help a couple folks make it out. The reverse pelvis created by the apple and the extra mountain created by the pear are a little less obvious in this one.

This is my favorite Dali hidden face picture. It also strangely appropriate to a JB board. If you stand far away from it, or reduce the image, the portrait is clear. Freaky!
"Slave Market with Vanishing Bust of Voltaire" is the title of the piece at the top of the page. And this thread is even less off-topic than you might have guessed. I have a signed print of that one hanging in my living room.
Coincidently, I just pulled out all of my G3s to read in one sitting--and I decided to put together the Darkseid head and see how it looked at full size. A bit harder to pick out, but I think it's the coloring that does it. It's a bit easier to see in black & white.
Keep in mind that the Darkseid face was never supposed to "leap off the page". I did not want the elements of its composition distracting from the images of which they were parts.
(I knew we were in trouble when the second issue came out and people started complaining -- yes, complaining -- that they "couldn't see the image". I know it's all about instant gratification, but. . . !!!)
I found the easiest way to "see" Darkseid on the covers was to place the books on the floor and stand on a stool. Squinting a little helped. When I showed this to my 10-year-old son, his first response was "Ooooo-Yow!"
Alright, I'm lame...I couldn't see the Darkseid head in the B/W image someone posted here months ago. I also never laid out my books on the floor to try and see it. That is mostly because our house is usually too messy for me to spread out 12 books on the floor.
