DOOM PATROL 1 in June

Just to make sure no one misses this. DPATROL 1 will be shipping in June. It is not on DC's solicitations this month because of the "security" around the JLA storyline. The issue will be retro-solicited in the next month, along with the solicitation for 2.

Certainly. JB, did you notice that the Doom Patrol will be in Alan Davis' JLA: Another Nail as well. Coincedental that JLA, The Series, The Archive and the Nail all come out within a couple months?

I wasn't sure if it had to do with that or not...I didn't want to jump to any conclusions.

Thank you, JB.

Phew ... I've got a bet going on with Mike Daniels that JB will get more issues of Doom Patrol out this year than Larsen will with Savage Dragon. Giving him a 5 month head start is enough - don't wanna go six!

Given the fact that Larsen is now the head of Image publishing I think you're in.

Ya never know.

The issue of Savage Dragon that comes out this month (a week late) was supposed to be released back in December. Unfortunately, it's not about how late it is, it's how many books in the series by the end of the year.

In Jan-March, Image will have managed to get two issues out.

Ya wouldn't mind going bi-weekly for me, would ya, JB?

When I finish the issue I am currently working on, there will be 6 DOOM PATROLs in the drawer. Unless something happens with one of the steps after me, that means when I draw page 22 of this issue, the rest of 2004 will be done .

And that's 3 months before the first issue ships.

Oh, I was never worried about your productivity.

It's Larsen's productivity that could get me in trouble.

* Edited to add: Savage Dragon is a good comic. I recommend it. It's Daniels that ticked me off, not Larsen.

This would be Erik "I am still producing SAVAGE DRAGON even tho it makes no money because I love my fans so much" Larsen?

Surely, then, you must be mistaken. Since he loves his fans as much as he claims, not a single issue has shipped late.

What's the profitability point? Savage Dragon did 9,568 in Feb.

Not good form people....

March 16 2004, 1:09 PM

It's not sporting to bash Larsen when he is not allowed to come to these parts and defend himself. He has stated that he has been banned from these boards. I happen to be a SD fan. The book is a throwback, and though it has come out late recently, when it does come out, it's a hoot. Despite the animosity between Lasen and Byrne, Larsen always lists Byrne as a huge influence and you can see John's influence in Larsen's work. If Savage Dragon was not profitable, it would be cancelled. Larsen has said so on a number of occasions. Larsen would not keep SD going at a loss. He doesn't have that kind of money to burn. At the very least, he'sd take on other comic gigs to make some money. Let's get back to discussing Doom Patrol...

I think what you said was very reasonable Ari. Now if you could be so honest and upright as to tell Larsen and his fans to stop bashing Byrne on their board whenever the matter comes up.

What's up with the DP appearing all beat-up on the cover of JLA: Another Nail 2 the same month as their own title comes out?

I have no idea if it's profitable or not. Larsen runs the company, he can publish it at a loss if he wishes.

Sales aren't that important to me, though. As long as it's good comics, I'm happy.

THE NAIL is an "imaginary story". I would expect Alan did not even know a new DOOM PATROL series was in the works. Read nothing into it.

Yeah, I recall him saying that on his board ages ago, and I said at the time that it wasn't the case. Maybe he tried logging on and had some problem (that never happens on Network54!!) and assumed he was banned. For that matter, the times he did post, not deleted, as far as I know.

Well considering that Byrne doesn't have to worry about running a company, has never been late that I know of and is 5 issues, if not more, ahead of his schedule... I think Mike Daniels will lose that bet. So far I have gotten ONE issue of Dragon this year.

Hmmm. I'm working on the issue that will ship in December. On a Perfect World schedule, the pencils for that issue would be due in September. I'll be turning them in in March. Now all I have to worry about is that DOOM PATROL 1 won't "slip below the radar" and ship late like HIDDEN YEARS 1.

With Carlin on the job, that's not something I expect to need to worry about.

Here's hoping!

JB,Besides your obvious Writing and Artistic Talents, this is why you are my favorite comic creator. Having six issues completed in less than six months is amazing, and why i have always been and always will be a fan of your work.you kick so much ass.

As much as I'm looking forward to seeing a second Byrne monthly on the schedule, all this talk about JB's productivity is making me wish that DOOM PATROL was a twice-monthly book.

What an eye-opener that would be for all the pros who can't get a book out every month!

We did talk about continuing the JLA's biweekly schedule into the DOOM PATROL. I talked 'em out of it on the grounds that it was unfair to potential new readers to ask them to invest that much in an untried product. I didn't want to give anyone a financial excuse to skip this title!

Much as my greed would impell me to wish for the semi-monthly <snirk> release, I see much wisdom in the monthly release schedule.

The first couple of issues need that long shelf time to set up what the standard buy numbers will be. We want to build a broad base and have even the naysayers get hyp-mo-tized by the pure quality of the issue shining like a small star surrounded by lesser works. As their eyes scan the cover it will call to them

Pick up the Doom Patrol
Read the Doom Patrol
Buy the Doom Patrol
It is much better than the X-Books you are holding
X-Books will give you cancer of the mind
Put down the X-Books and pick up the Doom Patrol
The Doom Patrol will make you smarter, better looking, and get you a date on Saturday night
The Doom Patrol is a comic you can count on when you need it most
It is your friend, it's not like the others...

...I'm going to buy several copies of Doom Patrol #1, and give one to each member of my son's Scout troupe. Anyone else know of any avenues by which we might seek to actively promote someone being interested in comics AND our host at the same time? DP#1 offers a great starting point, doesn't it?
