Mechanical pencil, Staedlet-Mars 200-HB lead, right on the page.

But to paraphrase Joe Sinnot, "it's not in the pencil."

Hey Brian, where did you disappear to after Spider-Woman and that Captain America annual you did?
I remember you did a Marvel Team-up and then you were gone.

Maybe not, but I'm heading down to my local art store to buy me a Staedlet-Mars Mechanical pencil with a 200-HB lead right now.

Maybe I'll never draw like JB, but at least I can draw with the same pencil!

Edited to get the technical details right now that I'm back from the art store...

Hey Melissa,

How far along are you in your art? Ready to try your hand at penciling a full comic? Send me some samples - I've got a script at AIT that's waiting for an artist - and that goes for all of you!

Best,

Mike O'Brien

Ask for Staedtler-Mars, then, so you won't sound as dumb as me!

JB are these the drafting pencils with the thick lead and metal sharpner in the "trigger" at the back?

Cheers,

Rod

Mike - I'm pretty basic, if I ever get any good I'll be sure to give you a call, but mostly it's the excitement of using the same gear (which is as close as I'll ever get I reckon). It's not like it's something I'm working hard at, and I've not had any arts training.

JB - Yep, noticed that was a typo myself, right after I copied your words in my post. Didn't think I'd mention it though....

Rod - the pencil I bought was as you described. Don't know about JB's. The 200 is like the gauge of the leads (or it may be the colour?), I thought it was the pencil, but the pencil series that fit those leads are numbered in the 700's.

If the links work properly here is the type of pencil

http://www.staedtler.com/e4wstaedtler/staedtler/com/eng/home.nsf/?Open&DirectURL=7EE3F8A12F9500D6C1256A930031CDC4

and the leads for it.

I've been using one of these for 22 years now and it's still going strong. The Germans build their pencils to last it seems.

When my dad was working as a commercial artist/illustrator he always used this pencil.

In fact I just checked his old supply carousel and he still has a 780, no lead in it, though...

And just to remind everyone -- I'm using a Staedtler-Mars pencil because that was what the store had in stock when I needed a new pencil last December. For much of the last 50 years the pencil of choice in the Byrne household has been a Faber-Castelle!
