Thought I would mention something for the fellow video game nerds here-
and that is the game I bought Wends called Far Cry.
This fps is probably the most impressive video game ever made!
It is an extraordinary technical achievement.
From the graphics, to the ai and every level of the single player department this game is frankly historic.
This is the best example of a good 3d game I have ever played.
Relatively speaking I think it is the coming of galactus or death of phoenix of modern games.
Well at least until Half Life 2 comes out...
If it ever will...
Anyone else tried this game?
It is a pc hog beware! But is well worth it.
It will probably come out on a mac in a few years

I am having a few multiplayer problems but haven't had the oppertunity to mess with that end of it much.
Now back to your regularly sched. geekiness.

Been hearing good things about it, and Half Life 2 looks VERY good, but FPS games just don't quite do it for me. Multplayer frag-fests can be fun, but it all feels too "Columbine"-esque to me (and, no, I am NOT a Michael Moore fan).
Might have to check this one out, though, just to see what it's all about.
On the subject of games, I just won the last race of the season at Interlagos (Brazil) in my online Grand Prix Legends league -- our four-man team clinched the championship, and I helped us along by winning the pole and scoring a flag-to-flag win. That's my fourth win of the season, and my second flag-to-flag victory this season. Some people call them "racing simulations," but the sweat that I'm covered with after an hour-and-a-half race is very, VERY real!
And you've got to love "games" that give you a nifty post-race report:

I've been waiting for this to come out, but now I'm firmly intrenched in Battlefield: Vietnam. And Silent Storm. And Neverwinter Nights ( all 3 ) um... and BHD: Team Sable.... and.. ah... Heh. Nevermind.
I hadnt bought a video game in about half a year or a year and then suddenly I buy Battlefield Vietnam and farCry both in two days.
Being new tot he Battlefield games I must admit I don't have one damn clue what I am doing in it so I am not sure if I even like it or not.
So far- I haven't been impressed.
I shouldn't have bought it near the time I bought far cry because there is no chance it can compare and it might very well go unplayed.

It gets better and better if you ask me.
I started off on one of the more difficult settings and I am glad I did, makes it pretty difficult but more fun and "realistic".
Makes me feel I am getting my moneys worth.
And if you didn't know, they have already released a major patch that fixed a lot of the little problems.
These guys are on the ball-
well true these things should have been fixed before it shipped-
still this is a great game.

Is anybody running Far Cry on a mid-range system? I've got an Athlon 1.1 GHz system with 256 MB of RAM and a GeForce 3ti 200 video card -- would I have any problems running Far Cry? As I noted above, racing sims are my #1 priority, gaming-wise, and my current system handles all of my current sim racing with no problems, so I'm not interested in any hardware upgrades at this point just to support a game that I "might" like.
Also FWIW, I had no problem with the XIII demo on this system, but I've heard that folks with slower systems have had problems with that demo/game.
XIII is yahoo checkers compared to far Cry.
You could maybe run Far Cry ok as long as you turn off all the graphics bells and whistles.
I run with everything on and have no problems in single player, but I have a 2 gig, 640 mb ddr ram with an ati radeon pro so you probably wouldnt get that great a performance.
I suggest downloading the demo and seeing how it runs: http://www.gamespot.com/pc/action/farcry/downloads.html
Tho the finished game runs more stable if you ask me.

Hey Dwayne, stick with BF:V it does have a bit of a learning curve, but it is the best time I've ever had with a computer game. I played alot of the single player mode of BF:1942 and then more and more multiplayer till I really understood what to do and now I usually rank in the top 10 during any game. I have my son and roommate network and playing too and you can hear us from blocks away yelling and laughing while playing. From what everyone is saying about FarCry, it looks like I'm going to have to go get it tonight!
Sure thing Don, I intend to do just that.
I do see that the game has a lot of potential.
There have been many games in the past that I thought at first I would not like but stuck to trying and learned to love.
I still remember the very first time I played my very first command and conquer game.
I didn't have a clue what I was doing but i stuck with it and that series quickly became my all time favorite group of games and that stratagy style is my favorite type.
I cannot reccomend command and conquer: Generals Zero Hour enough.
I intend to invest/waste some time this week on Battlefield Vietnam-
look for me under the name Fisticuffs!

Just a quick update -- I downloaded the "Research" demo and found that it runs quite well on my system (Athlon 1.1 GHz system with 256 MB of RAM and a GeForce 3ti 200 video card, Windows 98 operating system). I haven't gotten past the first level yet -- just having fun trying to find all the ways I can sneak around to get myself killed. Things seem to go well for a while, but when the $#!+ hits the fan, I'm usually toast within seconds.
Nice for a FPS -- the best I've seen yet, actually -- but I think I liked the idea of killing aliens in Half Life better.
John, buy the game and you will get to the mutants on the island and they will scare the hell out of you.
They are hard as hell to kill and fast.
They can kill you as quick as an alien form the aliens movies.
I remember there was one point in the game where I knew a few of them were hold up in these caverns.
Originally I saw a dead body there and thought I would go and scavange it for supplies.
These things attacked me from all ends even jumping out of caves/holes in the rocks.
The next time i went back there, this time knowing they were there, I was actually afraid and unsure how to go in.
I stole a jeep with a big cannon on it and sat there in front of the caves shooting trying to draw them out.
They were too smart to come out and try and kill me while I was in the jeep, so after I waited a while I just gave up and left them alone there!
You can about load a whole m4/m16 clip in these bastards and they still keep coming.
Lukily later on you get a cool auto shot gun that helps a bit with them, but needless to say I started wisihing they were those smart mercs trying to kill me instead!
What do you have your graphics setting on John?
Look at what they did to this poor guy:

Mutants, eh? Hmmmm . . . this could get interesting! I enjoyed Half Life, but I never actually finished the game -- the "puzzles" got tiresome about 2/3 of the way through. I did actually make it all the way though Quake 2, FWIW, so I do have a bit of experience with seeing FPS games through to completion.
I'm not sure what all my graphic settings are, but I recall setting the resolution to 1024 x 768, 32-bit colors within the game. I don't recall seeing any of the effects/detail levels scaled back, so it looks pretty darn good (similar to your screens). Swimming in the lagoon in the opening sequence and then coming out of the water with all the soldiers there makes me laugh -- it's like an episode of Gilligan's Island gone horribly, horribly wrong.
"coming out of the water with all the soldiers there makes me laugh"
One of the most memorable multiplayer moments I had the first day was when some guy from britan was shooting at me.
I was almost dead and jumped into a big body of water.
it was pretty cool to be swimming under water, splashing about and seeing his bullets zipping through the water around me.
just like some movie.
I haven't tried the multiplayer since the patch.
I hope some of the small issues it had have been fixed.

Okay, after a serious upgrade that I've been lusting after ( Athlon 64+3200, mobo amd 512 400 ram) i just got back from picking up FarCry and will be firing it up soon. BF:V is still sucking up major amounts of my time.
You will have to be sure to let us know what you think about it.
I am off starting Tuesday and intend to give battlefieldV another good shot.
I still haven't got all the controls on it set to my liking.

The controls were the hardest thing for me to get set in BF:1942, and being a lefty doesnt help. But now I have a set up that I'm 95% happy with. Just need a bigger keyboard pullout on my desk with room for my joystick.
Tried some Far Cry multiplayer this morning.
Finally won my first game and then won 3 in a row.
But I had massive lag at times.
But to be fair since it was so early in the morning It was on a european server and I hope thats the only reason.
Im off to get a hair cut and then I sit down and will give BFvietnam a serious go.

Here are some screen shots taken by me from my very own computer:
This first one makes a cool desktop!
Now this is a beautiful sky..
Here is a glitch on the way this poor joes body falls:
BTW Battlefield is STILL not clicking for me.
But I don't intend to give up yet- I will try it again soon.
Still I would think the graphics would be better and the physics.
