Saw this one this evening. I would imagine about 99% of the audience with whom I saw it walked out of the theater not realizing they had just seen a science-fiction movie, but that's almost a point in it's favor. Another restrained performance from Jim Carrey. Extraordinary performance from Kate Winslet.

Recommended.

I adored it. I used to say Fight Club was the movie I wish I'd made, but now I think it's Eternal Sunshine. I identified so much with the Jim Carrey character.

The best movie I've seen this year...another great story from the writer of Being John Malkovich (a fantasy) & Adaptation.

Charlie Kauffman. I think that's his name. Great writer.

"Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind"

Just got back from it myself and loved it. Wasn't a big fan of Adaptation, though I enjoyed Being JM. I thought that this was one of the best "relationship" stories I've ever seen. I almost feel sorry for people who've go see this movie and have never been in a long relationship, because I just don't think you can get that whole "Well, I DO absolutly hate this aspect of you. And this. And this. And I still can't live without you, nor do I want to." I seem to meet more and more people in my life who can't understand that people have faults, and they can't seem to ever have a relationship with anybody because of the faults that they end up, invariably, finding. I kinda pity them. I think this movie was a fantastic look into the actual, non-Hollywood (ironically) reality of what this 'Love" thing is.

Best reactions coming out of the movie: Two Jim Carrey fans, of Ace Ventura variety, looking like they just got smacked upside the head, bitching about how "IT WASN"T EVEN FUNNY!" Ummm, no, I guess not. But their best quote? "God, I wish I could erase the memory of that" (The movie) I giggled.

This makes me want to see this one.
I dislike Carry a lot but loved the Truman Show very much...
so I hope to see this one on a day off.

If you liked "The Truman Show" I will be very surprised if you like "Eternal Sunshine".

I did not like "The Truman Show", and the main reason was that Jim Carrey could not stop being "Jim Carrey". There is very little sign -- I can think of only one short, short scene -- of that "character" in "Eternal Sunshine".

Carrey's impressive...

March 28 2004, 10:33 AM

Back in the days he was in "In Living Color", I didn't really care for the show but I absolutely HATED him, what little I saw of him but I have no rational explanation why. Maybe his humor was just SO intense at the time, it offended me? Anyway, I hated his guts but one time, just to try and see what the fuss was about, I sat down to watch "Dumb and dumber" and went in with a very negative mindset, almost daring the guy to make me laugh or like him. Well, i just thought it was one of the funniest damn movies I've ever seen and it turned me into a Carrey fan. Haven't seen all his movies, didn't see Liar Liar or the Majestic but i like the first
ventura movie hated the second, liked the Truman show and Bruce Almighty. I think the guys should be given credit though, because he's got a definite range though.
As far as this Sunshine movie goes, the first previews i saw didn't give much clue as to what the thing was about so I wasn't interested but the more i hear, the more interested I'm gettin'. Someday! -Rick

I'd like to see some more of his old stand-up stuff. Lots of impressions and physical comedy, and very funny from what I've seen. Are there videos/dvds of Carrey stand-up available anywhere?

The only standup show I have ever seen broadcast with Carrey was on the CBC during his living color days. If you check out their website they may have it available for purchase.

JB, i too liked "Eternal Sunshine..." -'specially that amazing
Kate Winslet performance!! i didn't think of it as a sci fi
film but i guess given the subject matter it could be.
Anyways, i really enjoyed the story in Eternal Sunshine
and the way in which the story is told. Great change of
pace to the usual Hollywood offerings...

Whether or not you think "Eternal Sunshine" is science-fiction depends on whether you think "Total Recall" would be science-fiction stripped of its Martian locales.

OK if you answer yes to this question, it's science-fiction:

q. Did it deal principally with the impact of actual or imagined science on society or individuals?

If yes, it's sci-fi.

(remember I've not seen this film!)

Well as the on-duty (we take shifts you know) academic and teacher for the JB board, I pronounce this film a work of science-fiction .

So, what did everyone think of Jim Carrey as Andy Kaufman in "Man on the Moon"?

I have enjoyed all of his films except the second Ace Ventura and The Majestic. He was too over the top in the former and the latter was to maudlin for my taste.

Liar Liar is a great film for the whole family.

I'm hoping to check out his latest this evening.

At the time I refered to it as my least favorite living comedian playing my least favorite dead comedian. A match made in hell!
