Help!

March 29 2004, 12:27 PM

Does anyone have a spare copy of this book to sell to me? It's the one JB series (or one-shot, book, whatever) that I don't own and have never read. Damn, I'd like to get my hands on a copy--but the comics shops in NYC haven't got one to sell. Help!

JB, you'd already stated that Palmer was instructed to operate on your art. But, plainly, did you get pissed off to see this "baby" so overpowered?

I think it was the first time your art was so altered, and you already was comics top dog by that time.

I was most unhappy with the changes Tom was forced to make. But, then, he was not thrilled to make them, either. All Shooter's orders. Why? I know not. Being totally eclipsed by Stan the moment he stepped into the project, perhaps that was the only way Shooter could think of to piss on it and make it his.

I bought that as a back-issue at a comic book store just as I was becoming a John Byrne fan. It's probably a second printing, but I knew nothing of such collector-isms at the time - I just knew that I wanted to soak up as much of this John Byrne guy as I could. I remember being rather perplexed at how un-Byrnelike the art was. I shrugged it off, assuming that this was something from MUCH earlier in JB's career, before he had improved to his (then) current state. It's very interesting to get a better glimpse of the real story almost twenty years later.

Was there a second printing? This book was done in the early 80s, before such madness.

I don't know of a second printing, but I'm not suggesting that's definitive.

I thought Tom Palmer was an odd choice when it was first announced that he was inking Silver Surfer, not because I didn't like him, he is one of my favorite inkers but because he had inked the Surfer once before and it looked totally wrong to me.
I thought at the time if Terry Austin was meant to ink one Byrne book it was that Surfer one-shot.

JB,

Did Shooter plot this thing? I haven't looked at my copy in ages, and I remember (perhaps incorrectly) that you plotted and penciled it, and Stan scripted it.

Also, would you have any copies of the original pencils? I'd love to see the differences between what you drew and how it was inked by Tom.

Hey, here's a question. Have we ever seen the back of Galactus's head? I've always wondered how those "hockey sticks" were attached.

********

They're not attached to the back of his head. They're attached to those "nodules" where his ears would be.

By the way -- Hero Clix has done a really KOOOOL Galactus. Same scale as the rest of their figures. so it is about 16" tall!! And it is very much "my" Galactus.

Now I have to find one. If this were DC. . . But let's not go there.

HeroClix Galactus

John:

That Galactus was sold as a limited premium at WizardWorld LA two weekends ago. Lines around the entire convention floor, all three days for that one. As soon as people got one (and there were very few), they were able to turn around and sell them to dealers on the floor for $200 minimum. Right now, they're going nuts on Ebay.

Silver lining: the makers promise to sell many more in future shows this year, but maintain it will remain "limited"...yeah, I know...huh, wha, who?

Re: Silver Surfer

I reread Darkseid vs. Galactus: The Hunger today.
One of the things that struck me (again) is that
it was faithful to the Starlin story in Silver
Surfer #50, where we learn that Galactus had
suppressed Norrin's memory and/or emotions (I
forget the details and don't have a copy here to
check).

Two questions, JB:

1) Did you generally enjoy the Starlin take
on the Silver Surfer? I did. I generally
like Starlin's cosmic epics even though they
do sometimes seem to get a little carried
away.
2) Do you generally keep track of certain
characters in case work involving them comes
up? Or do you go back and research continuity
as part of a your work?

So THAT'S what the line was for...

How much were they being sold for? Wish I'd grabbed one...

About the Heroclix fig:

April 1 2004, 11:02 AM

The image used for the "bio" on their website:

And to answer whomever's question about how much they were going for? $200-and up. You also got a cool Silver Surfer figure:

and a lame Invisible Woman figure:

The original is much better:
