While my good friend Matt (R.) is an avid collector of worthwhile DVD movies, my tastes lean towards the eclectic and obscure.
Why? At first I suspected my addiction to scented markers - my favorite was always licorice. But then I realized I liked movies so far off the beaten path that no sane man would rent them. And I wondered if there were others out there like me...
Does anyone else have any particular odd-movie favorites that make people blink twice when you ask if its in stock?
here are two from my personal collection...
"All these years I've been telling everyone they're doomed? It was me. I'M doomed!"
I'm everywhere all around and in between. I like stuff in music, movies, TV, and comics that everyone seems to like, and stuff that nobody else but me seems to enjoy.
Student Bodies, if it is the film I think that it is, was shown constantly in the early days of channels like HBO and Cinemax. We had cable at our dorm and so I not only have seen this film, I have seen this film more times than I have seen Star Wars (1), ET (0), Superman III (2), and the Matrix (1) combined.

I remember seeing the martial arts movie Kill and
Kill Again on HBO about 100 billion times. The
storyline involved:
1) an evil guy named Marduk and his thug city of New
Babylon
2) a blue fluid made from potatoes which was intended
to be a fuel source but instead is a powerful
mind-controlling agent.
3) dialogue that is so bad that it is funny
HBO played blind date about 3000 times back when I used to pay for hbo-
I quit since the showed the same thing..
I wonder if they still show blind date all the damn time?

Love that movie...first time I saw it was in high school ('85 or '86), rented it because I was (and still am) a huge Oingo Boingo fan...got the sound-track album and a few years ago I found Richard Elfman's web-site, where he has autographed copies available (just vhs then, I don't know if he has dvd's).
Just checked his website - apparently the video's are all sold out, there will be an announcement about a dvd release and there is going to be a theatrical release at the Landmark Theater chain!

ZOINKS!!!
I just soiled my drawers!!
That's the best film news I've heard in a dog's age! CAN'T WAIT!!!! My poor old battered VHS tape is on it's last legs, and Forbidden Zone could very well be the best movie of all time.
"Hard to Die" and "Sorority House Massacre II" are a couple of my favorites. I can't remember which is the sequel to which, but they both feature the same cast and the same plot. A guy who looks like a serial killer, and is impossible to kill, is really innocent. Bad stupid fun!
Eh, "actually" (!) personally, my favorite film is a three way tie between Malcolm X, MacBeth (the 1948 Republic Studios-Orson Welles version) and Army of Darkness.
Having said that, Forbidden Zone and Bubba Ho-Tep both have very special places in my heart - and would round out my top five favorite films, easy.

I know we haven't met but anybody that lists Army of Darkness and Malcolm X in the same sentence as his favorite movies sounds like someone with eclectic tastes that mirror my own.
Since you brought up Army of Darkness, which DVD would you suggest I pick up? I've been wanting to buy it for some time but there's only about a jillion different DVD versions. Which do you suggest and why?
(edited to add: Look forward to meeting you at MOC.)

Boy, Ernest, that's a toughie! Anchor Bay sure knows what side their bread is buttered on with Army of Darkness, as they have, what, 10 different DVD's of it!
I'd say, as both a fan, and a retailer, that... oh, this is tough, I'd say, I'd go for the "Boomstick Edition" - it's two good cuts of the film, and the best packaging.
There's like, what, 3 official cuts these days, the original director's cut (aka, the European, or Japanese cut - with the "slept too long!" ending, cheesy romance scene, and more fun with the little ashes, plus, "I ain't that good" line), there's the original theatrical release (with the S-Mart ending, the "Chinese Fighter Pilot" line, and the "Good? Bad? I'm the one with the gun" line) and the TV mix that has bits from both, plus MORE footage of the little ashes...
Then other versions show up on TV and bootlegs, so...
The Boomstick Edition gives you nice clean cuts of both versions - the audio commentary with Raimi and Campbell is the stuff of legends, and there's a few extra cool bits in there.
And, you know, the best cover of any of the different editions..
The content of all the various releases is the same, only some have director's cut only, some have theatrical and some have both-I had the original first release of the two disc set but I sold it to a pal for song-I would surely like Universal or Anchor bay to redo the transfer of the theatrical cut because it stinks.
The commentary is quite amusing but not as good as the Evil Dead 2 commentary.

I'm definitely interested, thanks! The poster alone compels me to run desperately into the night on a quest. Yes, I could use the phone, but running is good for you.
Earlier today, I recalled something very bizarre... has anyone seen something of this...? My favorite bit (among many) is that it has a special guest appearance by Philip Michael Thomas. Special. Guest. Appearance. LOL!
Monte - another winner - the Wizard of Speed and Time is AWESOME - I recall first hearing about it at an amimation fest in the early eighties - they showed a clip of it - I was like, oh, 9, maybe, and it really blew me away, and then a few years later, I saw it at a video store, and...well, there you have it.
I've known Monte for over 30 years. In all that time, I'd have to say we agree about the kinds of films we like about...oh...20% of the time! And of that 20%, it's all about Star Trek and LOTR with the occasional TIME AFTER TIME and Monty Python flic thrown in.
Ecclectic doesn't BEGIN to describe his taste in film! If you have anything like his taste, Mike, it's gonna be an interesting night out on the town in LA.

Mike Jittlov's Wizard of Speed and Time is an excellent film. It's sad he got screwed by his business partner and doesn't get any money from any of the video releases. Maybe someday he'll land the rights back and put out the director's cut DVD.
