OK, I sort of know about his history. But how and when did he become GL again? Also, what's the deal with his eyes-- where are his pupils?

To the second question -- I don't know! I just drew what was in the reference Carlin sent.

To the second, when earth's backup Green Lantern, Guy Gardner, was injured, the Guardians picked another, John Stewart.

As originally introduced, John was a loud-mouth Black cliche. White writers and editors putting on their hairshirts and trying to access the Black Experience. It has been interesting -- and ultimately rewarding -- to watch John evolve into a much calmer kind of "elder statesman" character.

Hmmm ... kind of a progression from Malcolm X to Martin Luther King, Jr.?

John Stewart has the glowing green eyes in the JUSTICE LEAGUE cartoon. I'm not sure how they explain it in the comics. Personally, I'm a fan of the look and would be okay with all Green Lanterns taking it on when they are "powered up."

If you mean most recently, the real answer is "when the producers of the Justice League cartoon decided to use him."

In story, what happened was that Kyle Raynor because disenfranchised with his fellow Earthlings and left the planet to roam the universe. Not wanting to leave Earth without a GL, he asked John Stewart to take the ring again. So John took the ring, Kyle's place in the JLA, etc. Just not the comic. Not yet, anyway.

That's the answer I was looking for. Where did Kyle Lame-ner find another power ring?
Sorry, I'm not down with the ruination of Hal Jordan, so I don't know any post-Hal details. Had I been reading the funnybooks back then, I wouldn't have read those issues anyway!

Kyle can make a ring for anyone he wants to. He also gave Jade that ability. Now where everyone is getting their power batteries from, that is a different question.

Didn't the ring duplication ability come from a time-traveling Hal Jordan? Something to the effect of "my ring can do this, even though your can't", and gave him a duplicate that has the same ability (to replicate?), and also replicate batteries?

Or am I misremembering stuff???

As I remember, it came as the after effect of the period where he was God... I mean, Ion.

Kyle reformed Oa which meant that the original Green Lantern Corps power source was back online. He also "fixed" Jade so she had a link to the Starheart again. Then he decided to reform the Corps, so he gave John and Jade a ring and he and Jade went into space to find candidates.

Edit: Well so much for my memory. Found a nice GL site that confirms the whole Time Traveling Hal Jordan thing. Reading the continuity made my 'iddle head hurt. Owowowowowow

Well, no. Malcolm X was never what you'd call a loud-mouth. A more fitting comic analogy for those two would be the Magneto - Professor X one that was so present in the X-Men film - two guys with similar concerns, but different ways of executing them, etc.

Also, Malcolm wasn't mouthing white folks words, as JB points out is the case with early John Stewart. A better music analogy would be ... kind of a progression from Eminem to Al Green?
