Wolverine looks mad. Maybe he's mad because they are erroneously saying he's based on John Byrne art. It doesn't look anything like the Wolverine I have come to know and enjoy from JB. That is something I wouldn't want if it was free.
Designed by Alex Ross, sculpted by Mike Hill, standing close to 18” tall, and inspired by the definitive Wolverine art of John Byrne, the ferocious, pint-sized mutant has been captured like no other before!
Yeah - really badly.
Maybe I'm being stupid but if you are going for "inspired by JB" why not just go for the man himself rather than Alex Ross.

The way John always drew Wolverine back then, he seemed clean shaven (other than the mutton chops), always had the white eyes thanks to the mask, and the mask was more a Batman mask than a Sunfire mask around the jaw-line.
The only likeness I can see is the general outline of the head.
From this, I gather they took the crunched forehead, the "muscle lines" around his chin, and the general lay of the mask from JB's work. Together? They don't gel all that well.
I think its supposed to be inspired from that last panel
of UNCANNY X-MEN issue. I can't remember the issue number
but it was during the Hellfire Club story arc. Everybody knows the one; he's in the sewer, you can see him from about mid torso up,and he is PISSED. I don't think its well executed but I see where they are coming from.
Don't worry JB. If I had $350.00 burning a hole in my pocket I wouldn't buy this. I would see if you could do a commission piece.
That looks Really good. And it defintely is inspired by Byrne's version of Wolverine. It may be the visible eyes that make it look less like Byrnes, (though there were times, as seen in some of the images here, that they were drawn in as well) but the rest Does remind me of Byrne's 2nd to none Wolverine. I think it's a great job.

No, no sarcasm, just a genuine appraisal of a bust I Do think resembles your version of Wolverine, which again I think is 2nd to none. I think your dismissal of the bust makes no sense to me.
This is supposed to be the "John Byrne Version" of Wolverine, yet the eyes, nose, mouth, chin, neck, head and mask configurations look nothing like any version I have ever drawn.
It does, however, look exactly like what it is -- and Alex Ross version of Wolverine. And that is how they should be selling it.
I see. You take offense at your name being Used in the selling points of the bust, and maybe you should, since if they wanted to sell a John Byrne Wolverine version for the bust, they should have contacted John Byrne himself to do it...but again, I think it Does resemble your definitive version of Wolverine.

The ONLY thing in this sculpture that reminds me of a Byrne Wolverive is the way the upper lip is curling under to meet the teeth. There is absolutely nothing else that even remotely suggests JB's Wolverine.

Yup. Like most of the stuff Ross has done since MARVELS, this looks like some guy (and a fleshy guy at that) in a Wolverine costume. Again, like Wolverine would look, not like Wolverine should look.
Definitely agree with your point on this bust.
Your Wolverine have never really been duplicated
by any other artist. They even abandoned the brown
and orange outfit Wolverine sported at the end of
your X-Men run.
Everytime they try and do a "Byrne" rendition in sculpture it looks nothing like his Wolverine. There was some full figure statue awhile back that was supposed to be based on JB's........that missed the mark too.

Are you thinking of the "Wolverine in the Sewer" that was announced? I remember reading about that and thinking "How the heck can they do that? It only works from one angle!"
Of course, how they "did it" was by doing a full-figure Wolverine stalking thru a sewer "set". Fine for what it was, I suppose (tho much too steroidic and constipated for my taste), but not at all "as advertised".
"This is supposed to be the 'John Byrne Version' of Wolverine..."

I haven't seen that on any write up I've read. Every one I've read says "inspired by John Byrne art". I don't think there is anything in the definition of 'inspire' that means it has to look like yours.
Oddly, the picture from the link I find horrendous, yet the 3/4 pic here in the thread I absolutely love.
. . . my lawyer has been in communication with the necessary parties, and my name will be removed from the advertising.
JB-)
That's awesome! I know if I am tired of seeing "definitive Byrne version" stuff done without your input, I know you must be REALLY annoyed! If they want John Byrne-inpired merchandise, they should come to you. You are the most accessible professional I have ever encountered in any field! Seems like you'd be easy to find.

TPTB at M***** would have to grow a third side of their mouths to talk out of, for that to happen. They're too busy making money off my past work while dissing me in the present tense.
You know, like Stan did to Kirby and Ditko when they left Marvel.
I guess I can see a couple of different points here. I do understand where having my name attached to something I didn't authorize would tick me off. But, is there a fine line between art and merchandise?
If Alex Ross came out and said something about being really impressed by JBs work and that work inpired him as he designed this sculpture, that is one thing. He would just be honest about where his idea for a design came from why maintaining his own personal style. JB, I have read comments you have made over the years about models or people that inspire you when creating, yet you always keep your style. Your style is definitly your own.
Now, if the "insired by John Bryne" was something that was thrown in by a marketing guy, then it is selling the piece as something it definitly is not.
OK JB, I'm agreeing with you about this bust. At first, I thought you were being curmudgeonly (sic?), until I clicked on the link and saw the bust from another angle. I don't see any "inspiration" in the sculpture besides the fact that you created the tan and brown version of Logan's costume. I'm glad that the false advertising will be removed from future solicitations; its not fair to you and it deliberately misinforms the consumer.
"I don't see any 'inspiration'..."
---------
That's because inspiration can't be seen. Every drawing I did when I was 10 years old was inspired by JB...and none of it looked like his stuff.

If an artist says s/he is "inspired" by the work of another artist, that does not necessarily mean the first artist's work will look like the work of the second arist, Sometimes, yes. But not always.
However, if the work itself is alledged to have been "inspired" by the work of a particular artist, then the work should immediately invoke said artisy in the minds of viewer who is familiar with that atist's style.
This piece looks like exactly what it is --yet another of the over-literalizations that have come to be the defining quality of the recent work by Alex Ross.
