If nothing 24 showcases the absolute loss of humanity for the character of Jack Bauer. This man has sacrificed anything or anyone for what he perceives as the greater good. The great thing about watching it is that Kiefer Sutherland portrays it so well. The plot twists and dramatic scenes are good. But solid acting like he does every episode is what keeps the show going. Long live Jack Bauer. Even if everyone else around him tends to die in the process.
When I saw this thread, I screamed "DAMN IT!!! DAMN YOU BUSH!!!" forgetting that it was moved to tonight because of the press conference on Tuesday. I'm hoping against hope that the episode running tomorrow night on FX at 11 PM is the one from tonight, as FX ran the first and second season episodes one week after they aired on FOX.
"-- The White House press conference-delayed episode of "24" ("Day 3: 6:00 A.M.-7:00 A.M.") will air on cable sibiling FX on Monday at 11:00/10:00c and Tuesday at 6:00/5:00c this week in addition to its first run on Sunday at 9:00/8:00c."
Thank you, Hank!!!! I haven't missed an episode since the series began, but I was worried this was going to be the first one. Although I read your first post, there's still enough going on that I'm sure I'll be shocked just the same.
I guess the saddest part for me, was that when Chappelle took off his headphones in the helicopter, he was wearing a wedding ring, but when Jack asked him if there was anyone he wanted to talk to, he said no. I can imagine him having an ex-wife he drove away and wasn't over yet.
At least Mason made peace with his son. Chappelle was tragic and pathetic at the same time.

Boy, President Palmer looks like he's on his way out for sure. Despite the math - kill one to save 2.5 Million - ordering the death of an innocent operative in that manner is still murder. Jack of course would take the heat for the President, but it is the sort of thing that is political suicide no matter which way you play it if word ever got out to the other side.
"President Palmer, is it true you had a member of CTU killed as a negotiation ploy with a bio-terrorist, breaking the long standing policy of this government to not negotiate with terrorists, and doing so by ordering the murder of a faithful, hardworking public employee?"
But if he hadn't then it would be, "President Palmer, is it true you risked the lives of 2.5 Million innocent Americans, 2.5 million men, women, and children, for the life of one man?"
Either way, he's toast if someone looks into the facts of the matter with an eye to political spin.
It's also not exactly the best way to inspire confidence in your leadership, "Gentlemen, today I had the head of the Los Angeles CTU killed to appease a terrorist, tomorrow it may be you. Have a nice day." Yeah, like that wouldn't have your entire staff polishing up the ol' resume.

I just don't know how they can do another season with Jack Bauer as the lead character after this one.
The things he's done this year have made him so off-putting, bordering on unlikable... how many innocent people have now died because of his actions? Remember the prison guard who had to play Russian Roulette and shoot himself, because Jack's plan to break out Salazar involved starting a riot?
I'm not saying Jack now comes off as evil or villainous--far from it. But he's become VERY damaged goods, with a lot of blood on his hands--at this point, he's not too far from the way the Punisher is currently portrayed in the comics. I think Jack will have to pay for his actions in some way in order for the season to have any kind of satisfying conclusion.
That could mean death or incarceration (or neither) for Jack, depending on what the writers have planned for the future (and Kiefer Sutherland's availability next year).

That's what i've been thinking for a while too! This season's been the most
intense for Jack and he's been through alot. After 3 seasons i can't see how
the writers WON'T try to "shake up" the show for next season. Whatever the case,
"24" has become my "can't miss" show...

Yeah, it was a downer ending for sure, I was waiting for them to pull a fast one and they didn't. I noticed the wedding ring too, geez guy, go ahead and at least call your brother or (ex?)wife!
I have a feeling that Jack will be killed off at the end of this season. Last year in an interview, Sutherland suggested that Jack get killed off to show that everyone is expendable. I wouldn't be surprised if three seasons is enough for him and that's why Chase was introduced this season (to take over for Jack).

I've been thinking that, too. I also have to assume that Keifer S. is itching to get back to making movies, now that his career is up and running again--how long will he be willing to stay committed to a TV show, albeit a popular one?
Of course, since Chase has about as much personality as a dried-up sponge, and there's absolutely ZERO chemistry between him and Kim Bauer, I sincerely doubt I would keep watching if he became the lead.
I'm going to agree with everyone that Jack is probably going to die at the end of the season. I wonder if they're going to come up with a miracle cure for Michelle, because all indications are that her future isn't looking too bright either.
I just dn't know if the show can survive without Keifer. Tony Almeida might be able to carry the show, but I'm just not sure. The producers would probably bring another "big name" in as a regular character if they tried for a fourth season.
I don't think Michelle's gonna die. She was one of the first exposed, and has yet to show symptoms. I betcha she's gonna be one of the few who's naturally immune.
Also, some fan speculation has her as a mole working for Saunders, and she was immunized before the whole thing went down. I hope that's not true. I'm still getting over Nina being evil.
Right, Chase doesn't have much charisma (he seems to be pretty perky for having been tortured a few hours ago). What what's with that bad haircut they gave Kim? The majority fo Tony's lines seem to be (picking up phone) "yah?" and "I'm on it!"
I missed a couple of episodes, what happened to Jack's heroine addiction?
Of course, we don’t know for SURE that Chapelle is dead! Considering how fast & loose they play with the rules of believability on “24,” it could all be a dramatic ruse. But, either way, it sure was intense! Between that, Acaveda’s “oral exam” on “The Shield,” and Gunn’s creepy torture dungeon limbo on “Angel,” there have been a lot of moments on T.V. lately that have sent shivers down the proverbial spine…

I've loved the show since the first episode. I've seen Jack do some terrible things, I'm sure even more so during the three year gap between Season's 2 and 3, but he's never become off-putting to me. That's the humanity in Kiefer Sutherland's portrayal. Even tonight, when he had to do what must be done, you could tell that it was tearing him up inside. I've never seen that kind of compassion and anguish in Frank Castle...ever.
Since he has been carrying just about every order out at the behest of the US Government, doing everything for the good of his country and for little to no personal gain, I don't believe he needs to pay for anything. Going through his wife and child being kidnapped, his wife raped and then murdered, being shot numerous times, being horrendously tortured to the point that he needs to be revived with an injection to the heart, becoming addicted to a drug that threatened his life and career, having his girlfriend murdered in an escape attempt and being forced to kill a fellow operative has been punishment enough. To me, the satisfying conclusion will be to see the villain pay for killing hundreds (if not more pending the rest of the season) on some kind of vengeance quest.
I certainly hope that Kiefer continues his role in the show. He's a co-executive producer, so I don't think it's a matter of checking with his agent. Chase is about as interesting as a bowl of rocks, coming off to me as a warmed over Jack. I don't think Tony could carry the show. We've never really seen him in the field, as he's always been working out of CTU. I'd rather the series end then see it continue as a shade of its former self.
Man, what a powerful episode. Paul Schulze, as Ryan Chappelle, created a character that I loved to hate. Every time he appeared on screen, I wanted to jump out and throttle him. It's a credit to his talent that I ended up caring for him over the course of one episode, to the point that I truly felt sorry for him when he couldn't take his own life. That final scene, fading to black with no sound over the ticking clock, will stay with me for a long time. I haven't seen anything that chilling, on TV or at the movies, in a very long time.

"I certainly hope that Kiefer continues his role in the show. He's a co-executive producer, so I don't think it's a matter of checking with his agent."
He's been making rumblings since last year about moving on and getting back to his movie career, which has caused some concern among the producers and writers. I hope he comes back too, but you never know what's going to happen. (David Caruso, Shelley Long, Rob Morrow, etc.)
"Chase is about as interesting as a bowl of rocks, coming off to me as a warmed over Jack."
I wouldn't even pay him THAT much of a compliment! :-)
I recently interviewed Carlos Bernard (Tony Almeida) for a magazine article and I found him to be a REALLY nice guy with a great sense of humor. Maybe that's colored my opinion, but lately, I think Tony is a good character with a lot of potential. I'm not saying he COULD or SHOULD replace Jack, but I think he would be an interesting choice and a far better one than Chase.
"I'd rather the series end then see it continue as a shade of its former self."
I think that there's a trick up someone's sleeve. If you think it looked too authentic, remember that there was satellite cameras watching every move.
Also, Chappelle had a wedding ring, but said he didn't have anyone to say good-bye to. If I were in his position, I wouldn't want the bad guys knowing anything about my family. Better to claim that you're a loner; there might be a chance your loved ones would be safe.
This show has really torqued up the suspense since the hotel bombing.
For those of you who say that Palmer is on his way out, I agree. The minute he agreed to cover up Sherry's part in the death of that guy, I lost all respect for him. He SHOULD be drummed out of office.
I've thought Palmer was a principled, ethical guy until that moment.
I think Tony is a good character with a lot of potential. I'm not saying he COULD or SHOULD replace Jack, but I think he would be an interesting choice and a far better one than Chase.

Very true. To me Jack will always be part of the show in some capacity
tho' Tony's a great character if they wanted to phase Jack out at any point.
Thoughts on last night's episode?
I wasn't pleased with the kidnapping at the end of Tuesday's ep. Dude, how many times has Kim been kidnapped now? Five? Six?
Gettin' old!
To me, the most interesting stuff of the season has been the quarantined hotel, Michelle, and Tony. It's heart-rending seeing all those people die, with Michelle exposed to the virus.
Before that, it was the President and Sherry and the murder plot. Now that that's over, the President scenes are dull as rocks.
