MIV started as off as a separate story in issue 7 and was incorporated into the rest of the JBNM storyline in starting in issue 11. I don't have the TPB to compare against though.
Get the comics. The Mark IV story is integral to the plot (don't know why they were excised from the TBP). Also, JB's column "A Flame About This High..." is well worth the read. I found myself reading a few the other night for chuckles.
I used to have the entire run, but I sold off, gave away, or left behind all of my comics during one of my moves. It was good to get rid of 90-95% of it, but I would happily take back all of the crappy stuff now if it came with all of the great stuff too. I would even migrate the boxes of comic bleccch from my garage to my shed and back again every month as penance!!!!
I am not worried about missing the letter columns. I read them when the issues came out, and I feel like I am living in a JB letter column when I come here. I have been looking for full series runs on eBay, but the Hellboy appearance has jacked up the price on most of them. I think I will try to get up to issue 18 or 20 in comic book form and get the trades for the rest.
Thanks for the info, Mike, Brendan, and James!
